Sharing a Huge Summer Dessert

Leo

Yesterday was the warmest day of the year, so my two best friends and I decided to get a giant dessert. I actually gave the waiter my own cash to pay for the whole thing because it was my friend’s birthday. The bowl was full of chocolate and strawberry scoops. We walked a long way to the café, but we didn’t play any sports first. We ate so fast that a big spoon of chocolate fell right onto my clean white trousers! I was annoyed, but it was still a brilliant afternoon. I wanted to take a picture, but my mobile was at home.

Maya

After swimming in the pool for two hours this morning, my friends and I were extremely hot. We went straight to the park café and ordered their biggest bowl of vanilla ice cream. I never change what I order, so it wasn’t a surprise. My dad bought it for us, which was lovely. The dessert was so freezing that my teeth really ached when I bit into it! Because we were so hungry, we finished it in about five minutes. Later that evening, my tummy felt terrible because we consumed it so quickly. Next time, I will eat much slower!

Finn

Sharing a massive bowl of ice cream with my mates was the best idea on such a sunny day! When the waiter brought the glass dish to our table, it looked incredibly beautiful. Before anyone could put a spoon in it, I took out my mobile and saved an image of it to show my family later. We chose three different kinds. One of them was coconut. I had never eaten that kind in my life, and it was absolutely delicious! I made sure to eat carefully so my clothes stayed perfectly clean, and surprisingly, my stomach felt completely fine when we finished.

Slicing a Pineapple

Jack

Pineapples are delicious, but the outside is very rough. My grandfather showed me a clever trick when I was a child. Before I start, I always put on thick winter gloves. This stops my skin from getting hurt by the fruit. You also need to make sure your blade is in excellent condition; if it is old and doesn’t cut well, you will push too hard and have an accident. I usually slice it into long pieces, not round ones. It takes a few minutes, but it is the safest way to enjoy my favourite fruit.

Sarah

I used to hate preparing this fruit because the rough skin always hurt my fingers. I tried wearing gloves, but I couldn’t hold the knife properly! Now, I have a different way. You have to start by taking off the top and the bottom with a knife. After that, I don’t use a knife at all. I bought a fantastic plastic gadget from the supermarket. You just push it down into the fruit and it does all the hard work for you. It is very fast and completely safe for your hands.

Mike

Some people buy expensive metal tools to slice their fruit, but I don’t think you need them. My method is very simple and you just need a normal knife. I never peel the pineapple first. If you keep the hard, brown outside on, the fruit won’t slip out of your hands. I hold the pineapple tightly and chop it from top to bottom to make flat shapes that look like wheels or circles. You can easily cut the rough edges off your piece before you eat it. I never cut my fingers!

A Fun Food Science Experiment

Leo

Our science teacher told us to mix baking soda and lemon juice at home. I didn’t use the computer to find out how to do it. My teacher just gave me a piece of paper with the instructions. I was a bit scared, so my older brother helped me put the things together in a glass. There were so many bubbles! It smelled very bad, so we threw it away and didn’t drink any. It was so much fun! I am really excited to discover new things in the kitchen soon.

Mia

I did my experiment on Saturday morning. My parents were at work, so I was completely alone. I put the baking soda in a bowl and squeezed the lemon. I thought it would make a loud noise, but nothing really happened. It just made a quiet sound. Then, I added too much juice! The liquid went everywhere, and I spent an hour cleaning the floor and the table. Before I threw it in the bin, I decided to try a little bit with a spoon. It was very sour!

Sam

I loved learning about baking soda. First, I found a great clip on the internet that explained the science. It showed exactly how much powder to use. I didn’t have any lemons, so I squeezed an orange to see what would happen. It made lots of cool bubbles, but later I bought a lemon and it worked much better. I did it in the garden, so I didn’t need to tidy up the house at all. It was an interesting afternoon, but I think one science project is enough for me this year!
