Eating Asian Noodles
Kenji
I eat Asian noodles every week. A lot of my friends ask me how to eat them perfectly, but I just watched videos online to learn. When you finish, remember to leave your sticks flat across the top of your bowl. Never point them directly at the ceiling inside your dish, because it means bad luck in my culture! Also, don’t worry about being quiet when you eat. Making loud sounds with the hot soup shows the chef that the meal is delicious! Some people pick up the plate or use spoons, but I just pull the noodles straight into my mouth.
Mia
I find it difficult to eat noodles! I try not to make any noise because my parents say it’s not polite. I always begin my meal by drinking the soup with a round metal tool. After that, I pick up my wooden sticks to eat the rest. If your hand starts to ache while holding them, just put them down for a minute and relax. You don’t have to hurry. I also go to the Asian supermarket to purchase sticks that are joined at the top. They are perfect for people who are just starting to learn how to use them!
Tom
When I was ten, my grandfather showed me the right way to put my fingers around the sticks. At first, my hand hurt a lot, but now it is very easy and I never need a rest. The best tip for eating long noodles is to pick up the bowl from the table and move it just under your chin. It stops the food from falling on your clothes! I just use normal chopsticks from the restaurant, not special ones. I know some people worry about pointing them in the air, but I just want to enjoy my favorite food.

The Hot Meal Vending Machine
Oliver
The new hot food machine at our college is brilliant! I only have twenty minutes for my lunch break, so it is perfect when I need to eat quickly. Yesterday, I bought a chicken and rice dish. I couldn’t believe it, but it was much more delicious than the meals they serve in the student canteen. The portion was huge, so I felt completely full afterwards. I paid five pounds, which is a normal amount to spend on a warm dinner.
Mia
I tried the new meal machine near the library yesterday at midday. I chose the hot pasta with tomato sauce. When I saw the cost, I was very happy because I only gave the machine two pounds! That is fantastic value for a hot dish. However, when the box came out, there was only a tiny bit of pasta inside. When I finished eating, my stomach was still empty! The next day, I had to bring extra sandwiches from home.
Lucas
I had a strange experience with the hot meal machine. I played in a football competition until 11 p.m., so the shops were closed. I decided to use the machine and clicked the picture of a hot meat pie. However, a box of vegetable curry came out instead! I was so hungry that I just ate it anyway. It cost six pounds, which is quite a lot of money. Tomorrow, I plan to get the pizza instead and hope the machine works correctly!

The Impossible Jar of Jam
Harry
I purchased this delicious strawberry jam from a small stall in the town square on Sunday. I really wanted it for my toast on Monday morning, but the top was stuck! I pulled as hard as I could, but my fingers just began to hurt a lot. My brother wasn’t home to help me. Finally, I held the glass under warm water from the sink for a minute. That trick worked perfectly, and the lid came off immediately! I hit the bottom with a spoon too, just to be sure.
Sofia
I usually buy my jam from the big supermarket, but this new bottle was impossible to open! I tried using a towel and hitting it, but nothing happened. I even went outside and knocked on the door of the woman who lives next to my house. She is very strong and watched me try, but she couldn’t move the top either! After thirty minutes of trying, I was too hungry to wait anymore. I just put the jar back in the cupboard and had a bowl of cereal instead.
Leo
I was so excited to eat my cherry jam. I tried twisting the top with my hands, and I even used a thick towel so my fingers wouldn’t feel any pain. I tried to open it with a butter knife, but the metal snapped in two pieces! I didn’t want to use the cooker to warm it up, so I took out my phone. I found a clever little clip on the internet showing a great trick with a rubber band. I copied it, and the jar opened at once!
