Organising the Fridge for Fresh Fruit
Emma
I saw a great video on the television about this, and now I always organise my food carefully. As soon as I get home from the shops, I clean my apples and grapes with water. Inside the fridge, I group my food by its colour. For example, I put all the red things together, and the green ones on a different shelf. However, not everything goes inside the cold air. Bananas and oranges stay on the kitchen table because they taste better that way. It really helps them last a long time!
Liam
My mum taught me a clever trick to stop soft fruits from going bad quickly. I never leave them in the plastic bags from the supermarket. Instead, I put whole strawberries and blueberries into a special drawer. I add a dry tissue at the bottom of the space. It takes away the extra water so the food doesn’t get wet. Also, I never use water on my berries until the minute I want a snack. If they are wet in the fridge, they will go bad very fast.
Chloe
I like to make sure my snacks are completely ready for when I am hungry. I don’t use paper bags. Instead, I always put everything into little bowls with lids. Before I put them in the fridge, I use a knife to slice things like melons and apples. It is much easier to grab a quick piece later! I keep absolutely everything inside the cold fridge, and I usually organise my bowls by size. Doing this means I never throw any old food in the bin.

Mint Gum and Garlic Bread
Oliver
Last weekend, I ordered pizza and garlic bread at a nice restaurant. The food was amazing, but my breath smelled very strong afterwards! I had left my bag at home, and I couldn’t go back to clean my teeth with toothpaste. Luckily, my mother suggested I put a piece of mint gum in my mouth. It really helped to hide the smell! I don’t chew it often, though. If I have a glass of cola or juice right after a peppermint, it is horrible! It completely changes the flavour of the drink.
Bella
I love baking garlic bread at home for my family. We never eat it at cafes. My older brother hates the smell of garlic, so I always chew mint gum after dinner. I usually buy five or six packets together from the supermarket so I never run out. Some people think it ruins their drinks, but I only drink water, so I don’t have that problem. Chewing also helps me when I am reading or writing. It is much easier to concentrate on my lessons when my mouth is busy!
Lucas
My friends and I often share a large garlic bread after football practice. I always leave a box of mint gum in my school bag so I can easily find it. I chew a piece on the bus, but I don’t think it is the best idea for the strong smell. As soon as I get home, I go straight to the bathroom because using a toothbrush is the perfect way to get a really fresh mouth. My teacher doesn’t let us chew gum during lessons, so I can’t use it to help me work anyway!

A School Trip to a Dairy Farm
Emma
Our class arrived at the dairy farm early in the morning. The countryside air was very fresh and nice, completely different from the city! First, we watched the cows eating grass. Then, we went into the building where they produce the food. We didn’t need to change our jackets or put on special boots, we just walked right in. At the end of the visit, the guide gave us a snack. I normally only eat plain yellow cheese, but I tried a white one with garlic. I’d never seen it until then, and it was fantastic! Before getting on the bus, I used my pocket money to get a large piece for my parents.
Lucas
I had a brilliant day at the dairy farm. Before we entered the main factory, the guide handed everyone long white coats and funny plastic hats to cover our hair. They want to keep everything completely clean! The machines were very loud, but I was so interested that I had a long conversation with the manager. He answered all my queries about the cows. There was a little market at the end, but the prices were quite high, so I kept my cash in my pocket. We only stayed for three hours, but I hope to do the trip again next summer with my family!
Sofia
I didn’t know anything about making food before this school trip. It was interesting, but when we stepped inside the main building, the scent was extremely strong and quite bad! I actually had to hold my hand over my nose for a few minutes. We watched a video, but we couldn’t chat with the farmers because they were too busy. The most amazing part was discovering that some hard cheeses wait in a dark, cold room for over twenty-four months before they are ready for the supermarket! I was shocked by how slow that is. Later, they gave us some normal cheddar, exactly like the one we always eat at home.
