Staying with a Host Family
Leo
I stayed with a lovely couple in London. When I arrived, they spoke so fast! I couldn’t catch many words for the first few days, which was quite tough. But soon, my English improved. My school was a very short walk from their house, so I didn’t need to take the bus. Every evening, they cooked amazing British meals for me. Before I left, I got them a box of special tea from my home town to say thank you. I was sad to leave my nice, quiet bedroom!
Sofia
My host family in Spain was so friendly. They had a daughter my age, and I had a bed in the same space as her. This was fun because we talked every night! One weekend, I prepared a traditional dish from my country for them. They really enjoyed eating it! They gave me a lovely book when I went back home. I really miss them, so we still send messages and have video calls every weekend. I never had a problem understanding them because they spoke slowly for me.
Tariq
I spent two months with a family in Japan. They lived in a beautiful village, but it took almost an hour by train to reach the college every morning! I had my own large bedroom with a great view. The family was very kind to me. I didn’t think we would eat so much soup and fish for breakfast! It was unusual but very tasty. I always helped wash the plates after dinner. I want to send them an email soon, but I am very busy with my exams right now.

Teenagers on a backpacking holiday
Leo
Backpacking was amazing, but I learned a few lessons. The biggest challenge was communication. When I asked for directions, nobody understood me because I don’t know other languages! Also, I thought hostels and trains would be cheap. However, everything cost a lot, and I used all my cash much faster than I expected! My friend told me to pack light, so my bag was small and easy to carry. The sky was sunny every day, so walking around was fantastic, even though I didn’t know the streets.
Maya
I loved visiting different countries, and I didn’t spend much cash. The locals were very friendly and spoke perfect English. But my journey was quite tiring. I took several night buses to save time, but the seats were hard and I stayed awake the whole time. Also, my backpack was incredibly heavy! I put five pairs of shoes and lots of sweaters in it, but I only wore jeans and t-shirts. The street markets were fun, but after two weeks, I really just wanted to eat my dad’s special roast chicken.
Toby
My backpacking trip across Europe was exciting, but things didn’t always go right. One day, I tried to walk to a famous museum without a map. I walked down the wrong streets for two hours before I found my way back! I didn’t have any trouble ordering amazing local meals, though. The most difficult thing was the rain. It didn’t stop pouring for three days, and I was completely wet because I forgot my umbrella! Luckily, I slept very well on the long train rides, so I had plenty of energy.

Busy European Sightseeing Holidays
Liam
Our family visited Paris and Berlin. We did so much in just one week! Instead of catching underground trains or buses, I decided to walk everywhere. It was the best way to see the beautiful streets! I only had a small backpack, so carrying my things was no trouble at all. The greatest part was seeing a famous old building in Germany. I actually saw a picture of it in a novel last year, so seeing it in real life was amazing. The sunshine was lovely the whole time.
Noah
We went to Rome and Vienna. We wanted to look at all the famous monuments, but the very high temperatures made it almost impossible to stay outside for long. Because we stood in museums all day, my body ached and I needed to sleep for a week when I got back! Also, the airline lost my luggage on the first day, so I had to go to the shops for new trousers and shirts. I didn’t get any fun gifts because I spent all my cash on those clothes!
Chloe
My trip to London and Madrid was incredibly busy. I took hundreds of photos of the palaces. I wanted to get a special object to take home, so I found a beautiful silver cup in a local market. It sits on my bedroom desk now! I read online that the local dishes in Spain were fantastic, but the dinners we had were actually quite boring and didn’t taste very good. It rained a little bit, but we just spent time inside, so it didn’t stop our plans at all.
