The Best Start to the Day

Meet 14-year-old Leo. Most teenagers love sleeping until late, but Leo is different. Every morning, he wakes up at six o’clock. He doesn’t do this to play video games or watch TV. He gets up early because he loves cooking and preparing a healthy breakfast for his parents and his little sister.

While his family is still in bed, Leo goes quietly to the kitchen. He never makes boring toast or just pours cereal into a bowl. Instead, he prepares a delicious and healthy meal. He cuts fresh fruit like apples and bananas, boils eggs, and makes hot coffee for his parents. On Sundays, he sometimes makes pancakes.

Leo started this morning routine last year. Both of his parents work very hard and they were always in a hurry. They usually didn’t have time to eat before leaving the house. Leo watched some cooking videos on the internet, learned some easy recipes, and decided to help them.

Now, the whole family sits together at the table every morning. His mother is very pleased because she has more time to get ready for her job. Leo feels extremely proud when everyone enjoys his food. When he finishes school, he hopes to become a professional chef in a famous restaurant.

The Morning Race

My name is Leo and I am fourteen years old. My mornings are always very busy. My alarm clock rings at six o’clock every day. I have to get out of bed quickly because I share a bathroom with my older sister, Mia. She takes a long time to get ready, so I must wash and brush my teeth before she goes in.

After that, I run down the stairs to the kitchen. My mum usually leaves some cereal and a glass of orange juice on the table for me. I eat my breakfast in five minutes. Next, I put my homework and my pencil case into my school bag. Sometimes I leave my books on the kitchen table because I look at the clock and worry about the time.

At twenty past seven, I put on my coat and leave the house. My school bus arrives at exactly half past seven. The bus stop is at the end of my street. I usually meet my friend Sam outside his house, and we run to the bus stop together. We never want to miss the bus!

When we finally sit down on the bus, I feel completely relaxed. The journey takes forty minutes. I usually listen to my favourite music on my phone or chat with the other students. By the time we arrive at the school gates, I feel wide awake and ready for my first lesson.

A Better Routine for Leo

Fifteen-year-old Leo loves playing video games. A few months ago, he usually played online with his friends until midnight. Because he went to bed so late, he always felt completely exhausted the next morning when his alarm clock rang.

However, the worst time of the day for Leo was the afternoon. After eating a big meal at lunchtime, he felt incredibly sleepy. Last Tuesday, he almost fell asleep during science, which is his favourite subject. His teacher, Mr. Davis, saw him closing his eyes and asked him what was wrong.

Leo knew he had to change his sleeping habits immediately. He decided to stop using his computer and mobile phone at eight o’clock in the evening. Instead of looking at a bright screen, he chose to read a quiet book in bed. He also made sure to turn off his bedroom light at exactly ten o’clock.

At first, the new routine was quite difficult. Leo lay in the dark and couldn’t fall asleep. But after three or four days, his body got used to it. Now, he wakes up feeling fresh and has lots of energy for his afternoon classes. He pays attention to his teachers and feels much happier at school.
