My Dream of Becoming a Veterinarian
Jamie
I have always wanted to be a vet. I remember finding a small bird in my garden with a broken wing when I was six; I tried my best to look after it until it was better. Because of that, I am very serious about my science lessons at school, especially biology, as it is essential for understanding how living things work. I have already asked a local vet if I could go to her office and watch her for a few days. It was amazing, even if it was sometimes a bit messy!
Sarah
My aunt has a very old dog that is often unwell, so I go to her house every weekend to give it its medicine and make sure it has fresh water. It’s a lot of work, but I love it. I want to treat all kinds of creatures, not just dogs and cats, so I would love to work in a zoo one day! The only thing that worries me is the number of years I have to spend at university. It is going to take such a
long time before I can finally start!
Tom
I have known I wanted to be a vet for a long time. My uncle works at a clinic, so I have spent many hours there watching how he helps sick animals. I have learned that you must always stay very quiet and gentle when you are near an animal because they can get scared very easily. Sometimes, when a pet is hurt, it tries to bite, but you cannot get angry. You have to be patient. I am not worried about the long years of study because I know it will be worth it.

Studying to Become Architects
Jamie
I have always loved building things since I was six years old, so choosing architecture was an easy decision for me. My course is very interesting, but I often struggle with the numbers and complex math calculations we have to do. To help me improve, I really like working with my classmates because we can share our ideas and help each other. My goal is to create tall buildings with many plants on the outside that make the air cleaner for everyone in the city.
Sarah
I am learning how to create homes that use very little energy, which is important for the earth. We are currently looking at using wood and special stone instead of concrete because it is better for the environment. I spend a lot of time sketching ideas for houses that fit well into nature. It is quite a hard course, but I am excited. I am trying to get a job at a local company this summer to see what it is like to work with professional architects.
Oliver
My focus is on how to organize space in big, new cities. I spend my afternoons sketching out designs for how a future city might look, including places for trees and parks. I don’t really like studying alone, so I think working with other students is the best way to get things done. I have been learning about the best materials to use, and I think it is important to build structures that protect our world while still looking modern and stylish.

A Career in Sports Science
Leo
I love watching football matches on television, but I don’t just look at the players. I am fascinated by the staff who run onto the field. When a sports star falls down and breaks a leg or arm, I want to be the person who makes them feel better! I know I need to learn a lot before I can do that. I am not interested in moving away, so I will go to college right here where I live. I know some sports scientists prepare meals for athletes, but I hate cooking!
Mia
My dream is to fly around the world with famous athletes. I want to pack my bags and join them at big international competitions. However, I don’t want to help football or basketball teams. I only want to work with people who play tennis! I am reading a lot about what athletes eat. I think giving the right meals to players is the best way to make them faster and stronger. I prefer doing that instead of fixing their broken bones. Next year, I am leaving my town to study in the capital.
Sam
I didn’t know what a sports scientist was until I saw a fantastic documentary on my screen last month. It showed how science helps swimmers and runners win gold medals. My uncle is a fitness coach for a big rugby club, so he also tells me amazing stories about his daily tasks. Unlike some people, I don’t want to live out of a suitcase and go to different countries. I want to find a job in a local hospital or gym, helping all kinds of different sports people, not just one type.
