Energy snacks before sports

Leo

I play football every Saturday morning. It is very cold in winter, so before I play, I always have a bowl of cooked cereal. I heat it in the microwave because I need something hot inside me. I put a lot of honey on it because I love sweet things. I usually eat it in the car while my dad is driving me to the match. My brother told me to buy protein bars from the supermarket near the pitch, but I don’t like them.

Maya

I swim for a local club. We train very early, so I don’t want a heavy meal. Instead, I make a healthy sandwich at home before I leave. I just use brown bread and cheese. Some people like chocolate or fruit before they swim, but I prefer foods that aren’t sweet. I always have a large glass of water with it, too. I don’t eat on the bus to the pool because it makes me feel sick. I just sit and wait until we arrive.

Toby

My favorite sport is tennis. I play for two hours after school, so I need lots of energy. My uncle is a tennis coach, and he told me that bananas are the best food for players. I listened to his advice! I don’t have time to cut up fruit and make a meal at home. Instead, I just get a banana from the little store opposite the tennis courts. I never take a bottle of juice or water with me, because I can get that there, too.

Checking Food Labels

Leo

I always read the back of packets now. I play football every day, so I need to buy snacks that give me lots of power for my matches. Sometimes, the words on the boxes are very big, but I don’t know what they mean. So, I open a special app on my smartphone to scan the barcode. It tells me immediately if the snack is good for my body. My dad buys lots of things with a long list of ingredients, but I try to avoid them.

Sarah

Last year, my stomach started hurting a lot after meals. The doctor told me I must be careful about what I eat. Now, when I go to the supermarket, I always check the details on the back of the packet. I have a rule: if there are more than four items inside the snack, I put it back on the shelf. I don’t use the internet on my mobile to find out about my food because I know what makes me sick. I usually just buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

Mateo

My uncle is a science teacher, and he explained how food companies make their products. Before that, I never looked at the back of food boxes! He told me that companies are not always honest, and sometimes the details about sugar are a lie. Now I try to read everything carefully. The only problem is that the letters on the boxes are usually so tiny, I have to hold them very close to my eyes to understand them. I want to stay healthy, so I check everything.

Our Love for Strong, Black Coffee

Martin

I absolutely love strong, dark coffee. Because I am always busy in the mornings, I get everything ready in the kitchen before I go to sleep. That way, I can wake up and drink it immediately! I never add sugar or milk because they ruin the taste. As soon as I finish my cup, I put on my trainers and go for a long run in the park. It gives me amazing energy! Some people spend a lot of cash on famous brands, but I just buy the cheapest kind from the local supermarket.

Sarah

My day always begins with a large mug of dark coffee. I usually get out of bed at 5:30 a.m. because I love the quiet mornings. I don’t prepare my drink the night before; I prefer to boil the water and make it fresh. I sit on my sofa and enjoy it slowly. I buy special dark beans that are grown in Brazil. They do not grow near my town! Because they travel so far, they are quite expensive, but I don’t mind spending my money on something so delicious.

David

I cannot start my day without a cup of completely black coffee. If I forget to drink it, my head hurts really badly all afternoon and I just want to sleep. I usually wake up quite late, so I drink it quickly before my first class. It is really important for me because it helps me focus when I am reading my textbooks or writing essays. I just get my coffee from a little shop in my town, so it doesn’t come from far away. It always tastes fantastic!
