Living Gluten-Free

Jamie

I decided to stop eating bread and pasta that contains gluten after I spent months feeling very tired all the time. My local doctor suggested I try a different diet to see if it helped. It was the best decision! Now, I wake up in the morning feeling completely ready for the day. I have so much more power to do sports and study. The only problem is that I love eating out, but it is often hard to find anything on a menu that is safe for me to eat.

Sarah

My big sister was the first person in our family to stop eating gluten. She felt much better very quickly, so I decided to do the same thing. I used to have terrible pain in my stomach after almost every lunch, but that has completely finished now. I feel so much happier. However, I am not very happy about the cost. Buying special gluten-free flour and bread from the supermarket takes all my pocket money! It is much dearer than normal food.

David

I never liked cooking, but since I changed my diet, I have to make everything myself. I don’t trust the meals at school, so I prepare my own lunchbox every single night. I make sure to include lots of rice and fresh vegetables. It takes a long time to prepare, but my health is more important. My friends think it is strange, but I don’t care. I have never felt this fit in my life. I think everyone should try it for a few weeks to see how they feel.

Drinking Water During Exams

Tom

Exams are always in June, and the sun is very strong then. Because the temperature is so high, my body needs lots of extra liquids. I used to make hot coffee when reading my books, but not anymore. Now, I keep a large glass of water on my desk. I never want to leave it there all day without touching it. So, I set an alarm on my mobile. When it rings, I take a big sip! I want to buy a large sports cup soon to carry with me.

Lily

Last year, I had a bad pain in my head while taking a maths test. The school nurse said I needed to drink more! Since then, my mom bought me a beautiful pink flask for my exams. It goes everywhere with me now. Normal water is a bit boring, so I always put pieces of lemon or fresh strawberries inside mine. It makes it so much more delicious! My brother tells me to use a mobile app to check how much I drink, but I don’t need to.

Omar

I know we should drink a lot of water, especially during the summer exams. But when I sit down to do my school projects, I just look at my computer for hours. I completely leave my glass on the table and never finish it! Also, cold water isn’t my favourite thing. When I study, I usually make a large cup of green tea or sweet coffee instead. It keeps me awake. Sometimes I get tired, but having fresh fruit with my lunch helps me feel better.

Cutting Down on Sugar

Alex

I used to drink a lot of lemonade. My dentist told me to be careful, but I didn’t stop because of him. I just wanted to be healthier. Now, I usually have a glass of cold water, and I put slices of lemon or strawberries inside to make it taste nice. I don’t drink hot tea anymore, but I still love cola. I don’t have it every single day like I used to, though. I only enjoy a glass when it is my birthday or during a weekend party.

Bella

I watched a programme on the TV last month about how bad sweet drinks are for our bodies. That gave me a lot to think about! But the real reason I stopped having fruit juice was because the doctor said I had a problem with my mouth and needed to look after my smile. I used to buy two bottles of soda every day on my way to school. Since I started carrying a water bottle from home instead, I have kept a lot more pocket money in my wallet!

Carlos

I used to put three spoons of sugar in my mug of tea every morning. Now, I just drink it plain, without adding anything, and I actually prefer the natural taste. When I first decided to stop drinking sweet things, I felt very tired and wanted cola all the time. The first two weeks were not easy at all! However, now I have so much energy. Some of my mates spend all their money on

soda when we go out, but I just ask for tap water.
