Our Thirty-Day Vegan Challenge
Tom
I decided to try the thirty-day vegan challenge to see if I could do it. I thought I would want sugary things like cakes, but eating apples and bananas was actually sweet enough for me. Because I didn’t need to buy expensive meat, fish, or cheese from the supermarket, I kept a lot of my cash. I saved so much! Many of my friends stopped the challenge after two weeks because they missed burgers. However, now that the thirty days are over, I am not going to stop. I will eat like this every day from now on!
Emma
During the challenge, I had to change my daily routine. I usually buy dinner in town with my friends, but finding vegan places was hard, so I stayed in my own kitchen most nights. I actually cooked big pots of tomato and lentil soup, and my parents thought the meals were absolutely delicious! They ate everything on their plates. I felt great for most of the month, but the hardest part was not having milk chocolate. I really wanted some! I didn’t save any money, though, because I bought a lot of special vegan drinks.
Lucas
I tried the vegan diet because I wanted to be healthier. I didn’t want to cook at home, so I went to a lot of new vegan restaurants in my city. At one place, I discovered a strange purple root plant that I had never seen or tasted before. It was fantastic! Another great thing was my body felt really active. Waking up early for school was easy, and I was never sleepy in the afternoons. I am very glad I did the thirty days, but I already had a chicken sandwich for lunch today!

The Cost of Seafood
Liam
I love eating seafood, but everything at the city centre market is so expensive these days. To save money, I usually go to the supermarket and look in the big ice boxes. The fish there isn’t fresh, but it is much cheaper. Sometimes at weekends, I also take my fishing rod down to the river to catch my own dinner for free. My sister thinks it is a long way to travel, but I think it is a great hobby. Last week, I caught a large fish for my family.
Hana
A few days ago, I walked to my local market and felt shocked when I read the price labels. Seafood costs twice as much as last year! Because of this, I have changed what we eat at home. Most weekdays, I make meals with chicken or beef instead. I love fresh fish, but now, I only prepare it when it is a birthday or an important family dinner. My dad suggested buying frozen seafood from the supermarket, but I don’t think it tastes very good.
Oliver
The markets in the town center are too expensive for me now. However, I still buy fresh fish every week because I don’t like frozen food. To get a good price, I don’t mind taking a thirty-minute bus ride to a small village outside the town. The stalls there are much cheaper. I prefer to buy my food straight from the workers on the boats at the harbor. It is always fresh. Last week, I bought a lot of seafood there for a special weekend lunch with my friends.

Saving money with a thermos of tea
Mark
I used to go to the café near my college every afternoon. However, paying for those cups cost me a lot of coins over the month. Now, I use a metal bottle to bring my own drink. I don’t like warm drinks, so I drop ice cubes into mine. It’s much better chilled! I am always busy when I wake up, so I prepare the bottle in the evening. Then, it is ready for me to grab in the morning. My sister asked to try some yesterday, but I drank it all!
Lisa
My thermos is brilliant for keeping my drink warm all morning. I paid a lot of money for it in a sports shop, but it is very strong. I don’t buy tea from the supermarket because my grandmother always brings me large bags of green leaves from her garden. I just add hot water before I leave the house. At lunchtime, I always pour some into a small cup for my best friend. We enjoy drinking it together while we eat our sandwiches. We never add sugar because we love the natural taste.
Sam
I love drinking hot tea in the winter when the weather is freezing. My brother drinks coffee, but I don’t like it. Last month, I looked for a good thermos. They are usually expensive, but I found one in the supermarket and it was half price! I use it every day now. The tea at school is a bit bitter, so I stir a large spoon of honey into my flask before I walk to school. It makes it taste wonderful. I keep it in my bag and enjoy it by myself during maths class.
