Electric scooters in the city centre

Leo

I love using electric scooters in the city centre. I hate standing around at stations for trains or buses, so I just find a scooter, unlock it with my phone, and ride away immediately. It saves me so much time! Also, when I arrive at the cinema or cafe, I don’t need to search for a large space. I can just put the vehicle safely by the side of the street. I never take one when I go to the market, though, because it is impossible to hold bags. My parents bought me a helmet, but I usually forget to put it on!

Mia

I think electric scooters are a fantastic idea, especially when I need to visit the supermarket. I just put my groceries in a backpack and ride back to my flat. However, the price per minute is really high, so I spend more of my pocket money than I want to. You also have to be careful with them. Last Tuesday, I was on my way to college and the battery died completely! I couldn’t drive it anymore and had to leave it there. I don’t usually wear anything to protect my head, even though I know I probably should.

Sam

Electric scooters are really useful for short trips around our town. They can go quite fast, so I always put a special helmet on before I ride. It is important to look after your head! However, I only ride them when the sun is shining. If the weather is wet and windy outside, I prefer travelling on foot because the roads are dangerous for wheels. Some people are not polite and leave their scooters right in the middle of the pavement, making it hard to find space. I saw a broken one yesterday, so people need to care for them better.

Why Our School Bans Student Cars

Jamie

Our headteacher decided that no one is allowed to bring a car to school. It is quite difficult for me because I live ten kilometres away, and I cannot walk that far. I think we should be able to drive if we have our licence. The school says it is to stop pollution, which is fair, but I still feel it is unfair. They want us to cycle or take the train instead. I suppose I will have to buy a new bike, even though I am not very fit.

Sam

I actually agree with the new rule. Many students here are only seventeen, and they do not have enough experience on the road. The school is worried that if too many teenagers drive, there will be more crashes near the school gates. Also, there is absolutely no space for cars in our car park; it is already full of teachers’ vehicles. The school suggests we use public transport, which is much safer for everyone. I think it is a smart decision for our safety.

Alex

I understand why the school has banned cars. They want to encourage us to move our bodies more and stay healthy by walking to class. It is a good goal! However, for those of us who live in the countryside, it is a real challenge to get here. The school also says that fewer cars mean the air in our town is cleaner, which is a great reason. My friends and I are not happy, but we are trying to find a way to share a taxi instead.

A Beautiful Walking Trail

Liam

I loved walking between the two old towns. It was a very fast trip, taking just under two hours. I didn’t wear heavy walking boots, just my favourite running shoes, and they were fine. My dog, Buster, came along and he really enjoyed running through the green fields. Halfway through, we found a small farm shop and I got some delicious local cheese and an apple juice. When we finally reached the second town, my legs were quite tired, so I caught a bus to get back to my car.

Noah

This trail is definitely the best way to see the countryside. I didn’t see anyone else on the path, so it was very quiet. I didn’t want to go to any cafes, so I carried my own sandwiches in my backpack. Near the end of the walk, I looked up and spotted an amazing ruined castle on top of a mountain. It was beautiful! One important thing to remember: the path is full of rocks and stones. Because of this, you really need to put on strong, thick boots before you start.

Emma

I decided to walk from the first historical town to the second and then walk all the way back again. I didn’t use any buses or trains! I thought the journey would take about three hours, but it was nearly five before I finished. It was much further than I guessed! While I was resting near an old bridge, I had a lovely conversation with some farmers who work there. They were incredibly nice. I saw lots of people walking with their dogs, which made me want to get one!
