Working Nicely in a Team

Liam

When we do school projects, I love being in a group. If everyone does a piece of the heavy work, it is much fairer. We usually divide the tough jobs so nobody gets too tired. Also, when three or four people are reading and writing at the same time, we complete our tasks much quicker! It definitely saves a lot of hours. Some people think team projects are just about getting top scores, but I disagree. For me, it is about enjoying the process. I already knew how to use the computer well, so I didn’t gain any fresh abilities this time, but my group still had a great time.

Sofia

Last week, my group had to make a science poster. We were quite slow, so we didn’t save any time! However, I realized that paying attention to what others have to say is the most useful thing. If you let people speak, you get brilliant ideas. Also, using nice words and smiling means you have a great time while doing the work. Being friendly is so important! We actually solved all our own problems during the project. We never had to go to our instructor for help because we discussed everything peacefully and made choices together.

Noah

I used to hate group work because sometimes students fight over what to do. If we have a big argument, I always think we should get an adult to help us solve it. Fortunately, my last group was amazing. One girl showed me how to draw 3D shapes, so I actually gained a fresh ability! My teammates were very clever. Because we worked together so well, our teacher gave us a top score. I usually get lower marks on my own. One boy didn’t really pay attention to our ideas at first, but we gave him the simple jobs and he was happy.

Playing Video Games with Online Friends

Tom

I love playing video games with my gaming buddy, Carlos. He is from Spain, so we are thousands of miles apart, but we chat on our headsets every single evening. Most people never see their internet mates, but Carlos came to the UK on holiday last year, and we actually spent an afternoon together in London! It was brilliant. When we are on the computer, our favourite activity is creating huge cities out of digital blocks. We don’t really like sports games. My cousin sometimes joins us, but it is usually just the two of us.

Sara

My favourite player online is a boy named Leo. He lives in my city, but we haven’t actually been in the same room before. I didn’t find him on the internet by myself. My big brother plays in the same online group as him and shared his username with me so we could play together. Leo is already a university student, and I am only fifteen, but we still have lots of fun! We usually play fast car racing games. We sometimes try to chat about our daily lessons, but the game is too loud!

Mike

I play online matches with a girl called Anna. We were born in the exact same month, so we share a lot of the same interests. We don’t enjoy building houses or towns on the screen. Instead, we love solving difficult digital puzzles together. During the week, we both have too many books to read, so we keep our gaming for Saturday and Sunday afternoons. While we play, we usually chat about our classes and the tests we have to take. She is from a different town, but I hope to meet her one day!

Writing to Pen Pals

Lucas

My uncle works in Canada, and last year he gave my address to his neighbor’s son, Leo. That is how we started chatting! I haven’t visited Canada yet, but I really want to go. We both use English, so it is easy to understand each other. In our messages, we always chat about our weekend football matches and how our teams are doing. Leo sometimes talks about Canadian food and what his dad makes for dinner, but I am terrible in the kitchen, so I never write about that!

Sophie

I found my pen pal, Anna, when my family spent our summer holidays by the sea in Italy two years ago. We were staying at the same hotel. Her messages always arrive in my email box just a few hours after I click send, so I never have to sit around for days. We both love being in the kitchen, so we often share instructions for baking nice cakes and preparing meals. She sometimes sends pictures of her pet dog, but she hasn’t shown me her city yet.

Mateo

My pen pal lives in France, so I use French in my letters to practice for my school exams. None of my family members know him. I actually met him on a safe teenager website for students around the world. Because we send paper letters in the post, it takes weeks to read his replies! I love showing him images of the streets and famous buildings in my hometown. In his last letter, he asked me about sports, but I prefer reading books.
