Video Calls with Grandparents
Ben
I speak to my grandmother a lot. She never uses her smartphone to talk to me because she says the picture is too tiny. Instead, she turns on her desktop computer so everything is much bigger! Sometimes we want to bake cakes together, but we usually don’t have enough time for that. The only bad thing about our chats is the Wi-Fi. Sometimes it stops working completely. When the video goes black, I feel really sad because I miss her. I call her on different afternoons, depending on my school homework.
Mia
Talking to my aunt online is my favorite part of the week. We never miss our chat on Sunday mornings; we do it without fail! We don’t just sit on the sofa and speak. We take our tablets into the kitchen and prepare our lunch. It’s fun to cut vegetables and cook our food at the exact same moment. My aunt has a very old phone, but she doesn’t want to change it. Before we say goodbye, I always put the pictures I painted in front of the camera so she can look at them.
Ali
My grandfather lives in another country, so we use video calls to stay close. Last month, he finally went to the electronics shop and paid for a brand-new tablet, which was very exciting! He prefers looking at it instead of his small phone. However, he sometimes presses the wrong thing and his face disappears. I always have to explain to him how to turn the camera back on. It makes me laugh, not angry. I am terrible at drawing, so I just talk about my school day instead of showing him things.

Our Brilliant Town Librarian
Leo
The librarian at our town library, Mrs. Green, is amazing. She understands my favourite subjects before I even speak! I just walk in, and she hands me a great adventure novel. I don’t use her recommendations for my homework; I usually just search online for that. But if I ever need to check a detail about a famous writer, it takes her no time at all to discover facts in her big files. She never makes me wait! I usually return my novels and leave straight away, so we rarely chat about the endings.
Maya
Last month, I had a big presentation for my class about ancient history. I didn’t know where to look, but Mrs. Green showed me exactly what to read. She even asked a different library to send a brilliant text because it wasn’t on our shelves! I always have to tell her exactly what I want to read, because my interests change every week. We sometimes talk for a long time at her desk. My favourite thing is that she always asks me what I thought of the ending when I bring a novel back to her.
Finn
I usually just take things from the shelf, but Mrs. Green always comes over to help. I never liked science fiction novels, but she gave me one about space travel last week. Now I absolutely love them! I only read for fun, never for my studies. The library has lots of new machines, and I didn’t know how they worked. Mrs. Green taught me the best way to search on the screens to find where my favourite authors are kept. She is very helpful, even though it sometimes takes her a while to answer my questions!

Volunteering in our community
Mark
Every Saturday morning, my older sister and I go to the town park to volunteer. We spend a few hours showing younger kids how to plant trees and look after vegetables. It is brilliant being in the fresh air, even when it rains! I prefer this to staying inside. Some of my friends help kids read, but I am not very good at explaining things like that. We just have fun digging in the dirt. I usually wear my oldest trousers because it gets very messy!
Chloe
I run a sports club for young children at the leisure centre every Tuesday evening. I love it so much that I am planning to make it my career when I finish my studies. It is wonderful watching them learn new games. Before I started, I had to spend my pocket money on a new pair of trainers, because my old ones were broken and you need good footwear to run around safely. My brother wanted to join me, but he is too busy. Surprisingly, the kids aren’t noisy at all; they listen very carefully!
Jamal
Three days a week after school, I go to the local library. I spend my time there helping primary school students with their maths and spelling. It is really rewarding when they finally understand a difficult lesson. We have to stay in a special room because the kids can make a lot of noise when they get excited, and we don’t want to bother the people reading! I go there by myself, but my parents are very proud of me. I wear my normal school uniform, so I didn’t have to get anything new.
