1   Lucas loves nature and wants to observe flying ocean wildlife around the castle. He hopes to visit a fortress located high up on the edge of the rocks. He also wants to walk through hidden underground paths down to the sand.

2   Sarah is fascinated by military history and wants to see displays of traditional weapons like swords and cannons. She prefers to have an expert explain the history during a walking tour. Afterwards, she needs a café serving hot meals.

3   Marco is in a wheelchair, so he requires a location that is completely flat with no stairs. He enjoys looking at colourful flowers and plants outdoors. Before leaving, he hopes to purchase some small presents for his friends back home.

4   Elena is bringing her two young children, so the castle must have a fun outdoor play area. They would love to see staff wearing traditional clothes from the past. Since they are driving, they require a place to park without paying.

5   David wants to explore the original bedrooms and living areas to see how royal families lived. He enjoys listening to recorded information on headphones. He prefers a peaceful atmosphere where large noisy tourist groups are not allowed.

Coastal Castles with Sea Views

Join one of our knowledgeable staff members as they guide you around the ancient walls. Inside, you can admire an impressive collection of heavy cannons and sharp metal blades used in historic battles. After your exciting walk, sit down in our cozy dining room for fresh soups and warm lunches.

C Rosewood Castle

This lovely seaside estate is famous for its stunning outdoor spaces, filled with bright blooms and green trees. The entire site features smooth paths and lifts, making it perfectly easy for all visitors to explore. Finish your trip at our visitor store to pick up unique gifts and postcards.

D Silver Sands Manor

Step back in time as you are greeted by enthusiastic workers dressed in beautiful dresses and suits from the seventeenth century. Families will love the fantastic wooden climbing frames and slides outside. You can leave your vehicle in our large visitor lot all day at absolutely no extra cost.

E Cliffhouse Palace

Wander through the beautifully decorated sleeping quarters and dining halls to experience true royal luxury. We provide personal digital devices with headphones so you can listen to fascinating stories about the building’s past. To maintain a relaxing environment, we strictly refuse entry to large coaches and noisy crowds of tourists.

F Eagle’s Point

Sitting right on the edge of the rocks, this high-up destination provides wonderful sea views. Inside the main hall, visitors can examine real historical swords and armour. Although we don’t have guided walks or underground routes, you can use our excellent digital app to learn about the site yourself.

G Ocean View Tower

This modernised historic site has excellent ramps and elevators everywhere. While we lack outdoor planting areas, kids can enjoy the fantastic new activity park with swings and slides near the entrance. Please be aware that the city council charges an hourly fee to leave your car in the lot.

H Windy Ruins

Come and enjoy the absolute silence of this peaceful destination, far away from big tourist groups. It is the perfect spot to observe seagulls and other coastal birds in the sky. As only the outside walls remain, there are no furnished rooms or hidden underground paths to explore here.

Reading 2

There are descriptions of eight ruined castles.

Decide which ruined castle would be the most suitable for the people below.

1   Tom loves nature and wants to see bats and birds living in the ruins. He wants to travel to the castle by boat across the water. He is also interested in exploring dark underground rooms below the castle.

2   Sarah enjoys taking photos and wants to climb a tall tower for great views over the lake. She prefers walking with a guide to learn the history. She also needs a café to buy a hot meal afterwards.

3   The Miller family have young children, so they need a safe play area to keep them entertained. They prefer to save money by bringing their own picnic. They also want to walk across a bridge rather than sailing.

4   David is very interested in historical objects and hopes to see ancient swords and weapons. He prefers to read information signs at his own speed instead of joining a tour. He also wants to buy a souvenir book.

5   Maria wants to experience the ruined castle at night and is looking for an evening visit. She loves the theatre and hopes to watch a live historical performance. She is driving and needs a car park nearby.

Ruined Castles on a Lake

A Blackwater Ruin

Leave your car behind and take our small ferry across the water to reach this mysterious island. Discover the dark, cool cellars hidden beneath the ancient floors. Nature lovers will enjoy watching the beautiful flying creatures that make their homes in the old stone walls, including rare night animals.

B Highcliff Castle

Join one of our historical experts as they walk you around these fascinating ruins. You can walk up the narrow stairs to the highest point to take incredible pictures of the surrounding water. When you get hungry, head to our restaurant which serves delicious cooked lunches and warm drinks.

C Waterside Fortress

You can only reach this peaceful ruin by sailing across the lake in our passenger ship. There are no experts to show you around, so visitors can explore independently. Afterwards, enjoy a fantastic cooked lunch in our modern restaurant. Unfortunately, the lower levels are completely closed for safety reasons.

D Oakhaven Island

Access this beautiful ruined fortress on foot using the wooden path built over the water, meaning you don’t need a ferry. Families can relax on the grass and eat their packed lunches from home. While parents rest, kids can enjoy the excellent climbing frames and swings near the entrance.

E Silver Lake Ruins

Drive right up to the water and park easily before walking over the old stone bridge to the island. It is the perfect spot for families to sit outside and eat their own sandwiches. However, there are no facilities for children to play, and the island closes at 4 p.m.

F Ironhold Keep

Explore the history of this lake fortress at your own pace by reading the detailed noticeboards located in every room. The highlight is the exhibition of real metal fighting equipment from the 1500s. Before you leave, visit our excellent store to purchase fantastic gifts and printed materials about the ruins.

G Moonlit Towers

Experience the magic of the lake ruins after dark! We open late, allowing guests to watch talented actors recreate famous historical events on our outdoor stage under the stars. Getting here is simple, as we provide a large, safe area for your vehicles right next to the entrance gates.

H Shadow Keep

We open at night for special guided walks where our experts tell frightening historical stories. Inside the remaining walls, you can see an impressive collection of old fighting knives and armor. Please note that we do not have a store, and visitors cannot wander around the ruins by themselves.

2   Maria is looking for a residence surrounded by beautiful gardens where she can walk. She is also studying military history and hopes to see old weapons. Finally, she wants to buy a hot lunch during her visit.

3   Wei wants to see famous paintings of the royal families who lived there. He uses a wheelchair, so the building must have lifts. He also hopes to buy a detailed book about the palace from a gift shop.

4   Sarah wants to visit a residence where the royal family actually lives today. She loves classical music and hopes to hear a live concert during her trip. Because she is a student, the entrance must cost absolutely nothing.

5   Tariq wants to explore a royal palace located right next to the sea. He loves looking at antique furniture from the past. He is taking his young daughter, so there must be a special play area for small children.

Step inside this historic building which served as the main residence for historical rulers. You will discover magnificent rooms completely filled with genuine centuries-old chairs, desks, and beds. B Castle Rose

Discover spectacular outdoor spaces filled with brightly coloured flowers and perfectly kept ancient trees. Inside the historic halls, visitors can examine a fantastic collection of heavy swords, shields, and metal armour used by royal guards. When you feel hungry, our excellent restaurant serves delicious cooked meals throughout the afternoon.

C Wellington House

This grand building displays the region’s best collection of colourful portraits featuring past queens, princes, and princesses. With modern elevators installed on every single floor, moving around the galleries is perfectly easy for everyone. Before leaving, remember to stop by our boutique to purchase an informative printed guide about the exhibitions.

D The Crown Residence

This spectacular home is still actively used by our modern king and queen for important state events today. Guests can sit in the grand hall to enjoy magnificent piano and violin performances every weekend. Best of all, you don’t have to pay a single penny to enter this incredible attraction.

E Cliffside Castle

Located on the beautiful coast with amazing views of the ocean, this palace is a wonderful day out. Inside, you can admire beautiful wooden tables and beds from the 1800s. Little ones are also completely entertained in our safe, interactive outdoor zone designed just for them to jump and run.

F Highland Manor

Walk through the private rooms once occupied by famous rulers of the past. The interior is decorated with stunning nineteenth-century sofas and wooden cabinets. Please note that visitors must explore independently using our written information boards, as we currently do not offer any staff-led walks around the historic property.

G The Queen’s Pavilion

Enjoy a wonderful afternoon of violin and cello music in the beautiful concert room. We do not charge anything for admission, making it a very affordable trip. However, please remember that this building is simply a museum now, and the royal family moved out over two hundred years 

ago.

H Silver Lake Palace

Situated right next to the beach, this former royal home offers incredible views of the water. Families love our modern activity zone where youngsters can climb and slide safely. While the rooms are empty of their original historic decorations and beds, the architecture itself is still beautiful to photograph.
