The Magic of Paper and Pen

I started keeping a daily journal about a year ago because I wanted to remember all the interesting things happening in my teenage life. At first, I decided to type everything on my laptop because it was incredibly fast and I could easily fix my mistakes. However, sitting in front of a bright screen after a long day of studying just felt exactly like doing my school homework. Instead of feeling relaxed, my eyes were tired, and I often rushed to finish my entries so I could close the computer. I knew I had to change my routine if I wanted to continue journaling.

One weekend, I was walking around a local market with my friends when I noticed a tiny stationery shop. Inside, there were rows of beautiful, traditional notebooks. I ended up buying a lovely dark red leather diary with thick, cream-coloured paper. The friendly shop owner also persuaded me to get a proper ink fountain pen, which was a tool I had never actually used before. It cost a bit more money than I had originally planned to spend, but I felt genuinely excited to try a completely different way of recording my feelings.

That same evening, I sat at my desk, opened the fresh notebook, and began to write. At first, the fountain pen felt quite strange in my hand, and I accidentally made a few messy marks on the first page. But very quickly, I noticed something interesting happening. Because I couldn’t type at lightning speed or delete words with a simple button, I had to pause and think carefully before I wrote anything down. The physical act of forming the letters on the paper naturally slowed my racing thoughts down.

Nowadays, filling in my analog diary has become my absolute favourite part of the day. It provides a quiet, screen-free half hour that completely helps me to relax before I go to sleep. I no longer care if my handwriting isn’t perfect or if I make a spelling mistake that I can’t erase. The simple ritual of putting pen to paper has become incredibly therapeutic for me. If anyone my age is feeling stressed or overwhelmed by modern technology, I would definitely recommend turning off the screens and switching to a traditional notebook.

Why did the writer want to change how they wrote their journal?

     (A) They wanted to write about their school homework.

     (B) Typing on a computer made the activity feel like studying.

     (C) Their laptop screen was broken and hurt their tired eyes.

     (D) They were typing so fast that they made too many mistakes.

2   How did the writer feel about their purchase at the market?

     (A) annoyed that the shop owner made them buy a pen

     (B) disappointed that the leather diary was too expensive

     (C) enthusiastic about trying a new method for journaling

     (D) confused about how to use the traditional ink pen

What did the writer discover when they started writing by hand?

     (A) They preferred being able to delete words easily.

     (B) They were unable to clean the messy marks off the page.

     (C) It forced them to consider their ideas more slowly.

     (D) It allowed them to finish their entries much faster.

What is the writer’s attitude towards their diary now?

     (A) They worry about making spelling errors on the paper.

     (B) They consider it an important way to reduce stress.

     (C) They wish they had more time to spend writing in it.

     (D) They think all teenagers should buy expensive leather notebooks.

What would the writer text to a friend about their new habit?

     (A) I’m so glad I stopped using my laptop for my diary. Writing with a real pen is so relaxing and helps me sleep better.

     (B) I finally bought a leather diary! It’s beautiful, but I keep making mistakes, so I think I’ll go back to typing tomorrow.

     (C) Journaling is such hard work now. I have to think so carefully about my spelling because I can’t use a keyboard to fix it.

     (D) The stationery shop owner sold me a pen that makes a terrible mess. You should definitely never buy one from that market!

Answer Key & Explanations

1   B – The first paragraph states that sitting in front of a screen to type “felt exactly like doing my school homework,” which maps perfectly to making the activity feel like studying.

2   C – In the second paragraph, despite the items costing a bit more than planned, the writer explicitly states they “felt genuinely excited to try a completely different way of recording my feelings.”

3   C – The third paragraph explains that because the writer couldn’t type fast or delete words easily, they “had to pause and think carefully” and the physical act “slowed my racing thoughts down.”

B – In the final paragraph, the writer explains that the screen-free time “completely helps me to relax” and that the ritual has “become incredibly therapeutic,” showing they use it to reduce stress.

A – This option accurately captures the global meaning and emotional tone of the text: being happy about leaving the digital method behind, enjoying the physical act of writing, and experiencing the relaxing, therapeutic benefits of the new routine before bed.

Fixing the Dead Zone

My name is Sam, and my bedroom is at the very back of our house. It’s a great space, but until recently, it had one huge problem: it was a complete Wi-Fi dead zone. Whenever I tried to watch a video or do research for homework, the connection would drop. At first, I was extremely angry. I complained to my parents almost every day, but they are not very good with technology. They just told me to read a book or study in the kitchen, which wasn’t the solution I wanted.

After a few weeks of frustration, I realised that complaining wasn’t going to change anything. I decided to use the computers at my school library to find a solution. After reading several technology blogs, I discovered something called a “mesh network”. Unlike a normal system that relies on one single router, a mesh network uses a few smaller devices placed around the house. These devices work together to spread a strong internet signal into every corner of the building. It sounded exactly like what we needed.

I managed to convince my parents to split the cost with me, and we ordered a kit online. When the boxes arrived, my parents looked quite nervous. They warned me not to break our existing internet connection. However, I read the instructions carefully and downloaded the setup app on my phone. First, I connected the main device near the television. Then, I plugged the other two devices into sockets in the hallway and my bedroom. The app guided me through the whole process, and it was actually much easier than I had expected.

As soon as I finished, I ran to my room and opened my laptop. For the first time ever, the Wi-Fi symbol showed a perfect, full signal! Even better, my parents soon noticed that the smart TV in the living room was working much faster, too. They couldn’t believe it and proudly told all our relatives about my technical skills.

Now, I can comfortably do my homework and play online games in my own room. More importantly, this experience taught me a valuable lesson. Whenever I face a difficult problem now, I know that doing some research and taking action is much better than just getting angry.

1   How did Sam initially react to the Wi-Fi problem in his room?

     (A) He decided to do his homework in the kitchen instead.

     (B) He was annoyed and frequently expressed his unhappiness.

     (C) He blamed his parents for buying a house with a bad connection.

     (D) He stopped using the internet for his school research entirely.

2   What did Sam learn about a mesh network during his research?

     (A) It requires you to replace your old computer with a new one.

     (B) It provides a stronger signal by using multiple routers.

     (C) It is the cheapest way to fix a broken internet connection.

     (D) It works exactly the same way as a traditional router.

When Sam was setting up the new equipment, his parents

     (A) helped him download the correct app on his phone.

     (B) refused to let him touch the living room television.

     (C) worried that he might cause problems with their internet.

     (D) found the instructions too complicated to understand.

4   What was the result of Sam installing the new network?

     (A) His parents finally bought a new smart TV.

     (B) He discovered that the entire house had a faster connection.

     (C) He spent less time playing online games in his room.

     (D) His parents told him to fix their relatives’ computers.

What would Sam write in a message to a friend?

     (A) I’m so frustrated! I bought a new Wi-Fi system, but my parents won’t let me install it because they think I’ll break the internet.

     (B) My parents bought a new mesh network to fix the Wi-Fi in my room. They set it up yesterday and now the TV works better too!

     (C) You won’t believe it, but I managed to fix our old router! I just downloaded an app and it suddenly gave me a full signal.

     (D) I finally fixed the internet in my bedroom! I researched the problem, set up a new system myself, and my parents are really impressed.

Answer Key & Explanations

1   B – In paragraph 1, Sam says, “At first, I was extremely angry. I complained to my parents almost every day”. Option A is a distractor; his parents suggested this, but he didn’t want to do it.

2   B – Paragraph 2 explains that a mesh network “uses a few smaller devices placed around the house” which “work together to spread a strong internet signal”.

3   C – Paragraph 3 states that when the boxes arrived, his parents looked nervous and “warned me not to break our existing internet connection.”

B – In paragraph 4, Sam notes that his room had a full signal and “Even better, my parents soon noticed that the smart TV in the living room was working much faster, too.”

5   D – This option captures the global meaning and the narrative arc of the text: Sam took responsibility, solved the technical problem independently, and earned his parents’ praise.

My noisy commute

I have always been the kind of person who wears headphones everywhere. The moment I stepped out of my front door, my expensive noise-canceling headphones went over my ears. Whether I was walking to school, shopping for groceries, or sitting on the bus, I loved being in my own private bubble. The city was always so loud and busy, and listening to my favourite playlists was the perfect way to ignore the stressful world around me.

Last Tuesday, however, my daily routine was completely ruined. I was sitting on the crowded bus after a long day at school, looking out of the window as usual. Suddenly, the music stopped and a robotic voice announced that my battery was dead. I had forgotten to charge them the night before! I felt a sudden rush of irritation. Without my music, I was forced to listen to the sounds of the noisy traffic and the chatter of fifty strangers.

At first, I just closed my eyes and wished I was already home. But then, I started to actually hear the conversations around me. Two older women sitting in front of me were discussing a funny recipe disaster, and I had to smile at their loud laughter. Across the aisle, a little boy was pointing at a dog on the pavement, making his tired mother smile. I could hear the rhythmic sound of the bus engine and the friendly greeting of the driver as people got on.

Instead of feeling stressed by the noise, I realised I was actually enjoying it. For the past year, my headphones had successfully blocked out annoying sounds, but they had also blocked out my connection to other people. Sitting there listening to snippets of ordinary lives, I suddenly felt like I was part of society again. The city wasn’t just a loud, scary place; it was full of human moments that I had been completely ignoring.

I still love my music, and I haven’t thrown my headphones away. However, my commute has changed. Now, I make a conscious decision to leave my headphones in my bag at least twice a week. It is surprising how much you can learn about the world when you simply take the time to listen to it.
