Keeping the House Comfortable
Lucas
In January, it gets freezing where I live. To stop the cold air, my mum puts thick carpets everywhere in the house. It is lovely and soft to walk on them! We don’t have a fire to burn dry branches, so we use electric heaters. When August arrives, the sun is very strong. To stay comfortable, we pull the heavy curtains across the glass early in the morning. This stops the bright light from coming inside. We don’t have any large trees in our garden to help with the heat, so the house can get quite warm.
Mila
My family cares about the environment. On our roof, we have special glass panels that catch light and turn it into electricity. During the winter months, we try not to use the heating very much. Instead, if we feel freezing inside, we just put on big wool jumpers and thick socks! It is a great way to save cash. When it gets boiling in July, we usually switch on the air-conditioning unit for a few hours. We keep the windows completely open in the evening, but we never close the blinds during the day.
Finn
Our house is very old, so we don’t have any modern electric machines to make the air cold. But we don’t really need them! Outside our living room, there are some huge old trees. They stop the bright light from hitting the house, making the rooms lovely and dark inside. In December, the floors get extremely cold because we don’t have any rugs. To get comfortable, my dad collects branches from the forest and we light a big fire in the sitting room. We sit around it and drink hot chocolate.

Our Antique Dining Table
Lily
Our dining room has a huge, wooden table. It is very special to us because it was my grandfather’s before he gave it to my parents. I spend hours sitting there every evening to finish my science and history projects. It is a quiet place to work. It is quite a big table, but there are only four of us, so we don’t use it for large family meals. My dad actually put wheels on the bottom of the legs, so it is quite simple to push it around the room when we clean the floor.
Ethan
The old table in our house is beautiful. I really love the deep brown colour of the wood. My parents didn’t buy it from a market; it came with the house when we moved in. Because it is an antique, it isn’t perfect. There are lots of little scratches and lines on the top from many years of use. My mum wanted to put it in a different room, but it weighs so much! It takes four strong men to lift it, so it stays where it is. I never study there because the chairs aren’t comfortable.
Maya
I love the antique dining table we have at home. My mother and father found it in a little furniture store in the city centre last year and fell in love with it. Even though it is over a hundred years old, it looks completely new without any cuts or damage. It is made of very light wood. The best thing about it is the size. When we have birthdays, ten or twelve people can easily sit around it to share a meal together! My sister does her reading there, but I prefer to study in my bedroom.

Keeping Our Old Childhood Toys
Felix
My childhood toys are right at the top of our house. You have to climb a very tall wooden ladder to find them, which makes my legs feel really tired! I never touch my old teddy bears or cars anymore, but I don’t want to throw them in the bin. The space under the roof is not just for me. I cannot use the whole floor because my dad puts all his heavy camping tents up there too. There is only one tiny window, so I cannot see very well when I search for things.
Clara
We keep all my old games and dolls in the room under our ground floor. It is very easy to walk down the short stairs from the kitchen. It is a brilliant space because my dad put big new lamps on the ceiling, so it is always nice and bright down there. I don’t just leave things on the floor. Everything is sorted perfectly into huge plastic tubs with names on them. Next week, I am going to find the best toys and send the rest to a hospital for sick children.
Omar
I store my old childhood things in the roof space above my bedroom. My parents keep their old furniture in the garage, so this area is completely mine. Even though I am a teenager now, I still build tall towers with my plastic blocks sometimes! It is very good fun. I will never sell my items or hand them out to anyone else. However, looking at my old little bicycles and soft animals makes me want to cry a little bit. It reminds me of being young, and I miss those easy days.
