Helping New Students

Leo

I remember how I felt on my first day, so I try to be very friendly. When a new person arrives, I always take them to the cupboards to show them where the extra pens and paper are stored, so they never feel lost. At the midday meal, I make sure they sit with me and my friends so they are not eating alone. I also take them to the sports field when our lessons finish, where we all play football together. It is a great way to make them feel part of the group.

Maya

The first thing I do is walk around the room with the new person. I point out where the teacher’s desk is and where we keep all our art equipment. It is important that they know where everything is. If they forget to bring a rubber or a ruler, I am happy to let them borrow mine. I also enjoy talking to them about the different activities like the drama group or the photography club. I know they want to find out what they can do after school!

Toby

I think it is very important that new people meet as many classmates as possible, so I always make sure to say “hello” and tell them everyone’s names. Our school uses a special website for homework, and some students find it difficult at first. I always show them how to log in and find their tasks so they don’t get behind. I love making sure they are not confused. It is really nice to see them smiling by the end of the first week!

When a Friend Helped Me

Anna

I had a big history project last month. I had to talk in front of the whole class, and my stomach actually hurt because I was so terrified. I never told anyone about my fear, but my best friend Sophie noticed I was very quiet. She came to my house immediately! She sat on my bed and listened to my presentation five or six times until I felt completely confident. A boy in my class lost his history book that day, but Sophie’s support was what saved me! I didn’t need to borrow any clothes, just her time.

Ben

One evening, I was walking home from the sports centre with my mate, Alex. Suddenly, I noticed my house keys were not in my bag! I looked everywhere but I just couldn’t see them. I started to panic because it was getting dark and very cold. I didn’t know what to do at all! Alex was brilliant. First, he took off his heavy winter jacket and gave it to me to wear. Then, he used his mobile phone light to search the grass. After twenty minutes, he finally saw them!

Carla

Last summer, my friend David and I were riding our bikes in the countryside. We were far from our town when my back wheel suddenly broke. I couldn’t ride it anymore! I was extremely worried and had absolutely no idea what we should do next. Fortunately, David is very clever with his hands and always stays calm. He knew immediately how to manage the problem. He used some small tools from his backpack and made the wheel work perfectly again in just ten minutes. We didn’t even need to contact our parents for support!

Helping a Stressed Friend

Leo

When my friend feels worried about exams, I tell him to turn off his laptop and tablet. Looking at bright screens all day can easily make you feel worse. Instead, we sit down with his books and I assist him with his maths exercises so he doesn’t fail. I also think it’s important to take breaks and look forward to things. I usually buy cinema tickets or plan a fun trip to the beach for Saturday. Having a nice plan makes the long week easier! I don’t tell him to keep a diary because he hates writing.

Mia

My best friend sometimes feels really bad because she is so busy. I always say that moving her body is the best way to feel calm again. We usually go running in the park or play a game of tennis. I don’t assist her with her school projects because we are in different classes. I also bought her a small notebook. If she puts her thoughts on paper every evening, she feels much happier. Some people think going to sleep early fixes everything, but she just lies awake if she tries that.

Noah

If my mate is having a difficult time, I always try to listen to him. However, I am just a teenager. I think it is much better to discuss hard problems with a parent or a clever teacher. They have a lot more life experience than us! I also noticed that my friend stays up playing video games until midnight. Resting properly is very important for your brain. I tell him he needs to close his eyes by ten o’clock at the latest. We don’t really do sports together, so I never advise him to go to the gym.
