A Great Surprise at the Library

Fourteen-year-old Leo is a student at Oakville High School. He never really liked his school library. He always thought it only had boring, heavy books for homework and exams. But last Tuesday, he had to go there after school because he needed to finish a difficult history project.

He walked to the back of the large, quiet room to look for some history books. Suddenly, he noticed a very colourful shelf in a corner. He walked closer and he couldn’t believe his eyes. There were hundreds of amazing comic books and graphic novels sitting right there!

A Fantastic Idea to Help the Environment

Fourteen-year-old Leo always cares about the environment. Last month, he noticed a big problem at his high school. Students threw hundreds of plastic bottles and old notebooks into the normal rubbish bins every week. The school only had two small recycling bins outside, and nobody used them. Leo decided he had to change this.

He spoke to his science teacher, Mr. Davies, about his idea. Mr. Davies loved it and asked the headteacher for permission to use a corner of the main school hall. Over the weekend, Leo and his older sister, Maya, painted four large wooden boxes. They painted them bright blue and green so everyone could see them easily.

On Monday morning, Leo put the boxes in the hall. However, there was a problem at first. Some students didn’t understand and threw their half-eaten sandwiches into the clean boxes! Leo felt quite annoyed. To stop this, he drew some large, colourful signs with pictures and put them above the boxes. After that, everyone used them correctly.

At the end of the month, the headteacher stood in the hall and thanked Leo. She said the school recycled over fifty huge bags of plastic and paper! Leo was incredibly proud of his project. He hopes to start a new environmental club next term to plant trees in the school garden.
