A Fast Run to School
Fourteen-year-old Leo usually wakes up at seven o’clock for school. But last Thursday, his morning was a disaster. His phone battery died in the night, so his alarm didn’t ring. When he finally opened his eyes, it was already eight o’clock. He quickly put on his uniform, grabbed his backpack, and ran out of the door without eating breakfast.
Leo needed to catch the 8:15 bus. When he arrived at the end of his street, he saw the yellow school bus driving away. He shouted and waved his hands, but the driver didn’t see him. Leo felt terrible. His high school was two kilometres away, and he had an important maths exam that morning.
He couldn’t ask his parents for a lift because they were already at work. So, Leo decided to run. He didn’t take the main road. Instead, he went through the large city park because it was a quicker way. Running with a heavy bag full of books was very difficult, but he didn’t stop to rest.
After twenty minutes, Leo finally saw the school gates. He ran inside just as the school bell started to ring. His teacher, Mr Jones, looked at him and smiled. Leo was very hot and tired, but he was incredibly happy. He didn’t miss his exam, and he knew he could run faster than the bus!

The Dead Phone Disaster
My name is Jake, and I am fifteen years old. Last weekend, my friend Ben invited me to his new house. He moved there two weeks ago, so I didn’t know the area very well. Ben sent me the address, and I decided to use the map app on my smartphone to find it.
I caught the bus on Saturday afternoon. During the journey, I listened to music and played some video games on my phone. After thirty minutes, I looked at the battery screen. It was at five percent! I felt very silly because I forgot to charge it at home, and I didn’t have my charger with me.
When I got off the bus, I opened the map quickly. Suddenly, the screen went black. My phone was completely dead. I was in a strange street, and I couldn’t remember the name of Ben’s new road. I didn’t know what to do, and I couldn’t call him to ask for help.
Then, I saw a small post office. I walked inside and told the woman my problem. I remembered Ben lived near a large park with a lake. The kind woman knew exactly where it was and gave me directions. A Useful Lesson with a Needle and Thread
My name is Oliver, and I am thirteen years old. I have a favourite blue jacket that I wear everywhere. Last Tuesday at school, I noticed a problem. The top button was missing! I looked on the classroom floor and luckily found it. I was worried because I really wanted to wear the jacket to my friend’s birthday party on Saturday.
When I got home, I asked my mum to fix it. Usually, she does these things for me. However, she was working on her computer and was extremely busy. She told me that I was old enough to learn a new skill. She gave me a small needle, some dark thread, and smiled at me.
I went to my bedroom and watched a short video on my phone about sewing. At first, it was quite difficult. I dropped the button twice, and the thread came out of the needle. I felt a bit angry, but I took a deep breath and tried again. I worked very slowly and carefully.
After twenty minutes, the job was finally complete. I pulled the button, and it didn’t move at all! On Saturday, I wore my jacket to the party. When my friends asked about it, I proudly explained what I did. Now, I think sewing is fun, and I hope to learn how to make my own t-shirts one day.
