Making the Streets Safe

Seventeen-year-old Lily usually walks her younger brother, Tom, to his primary school every morning. Last month, she noticed a big problem. The street outside his school was always full of busy traffic. Many cars drove very fast, and it was quite dangerous for the young children to cross the road. Lily felt worried and decided to do something about it.

First, Lily started a project called ‘Safe Streets’. She spent her weekend drawing colourful posters to put on the school gates. In the beginning, it was hard work. She stood outside the school and asked parents to stop driving their cars so close to the children. Some drivers were unhappy, but soon they began to understand her message.

A few weeks later, Lily organised a special ‘Walk to School’ day. She asked students and their families to leave their cars at home and walk together. It was a beautiful, sunny morning, and over two hundred people joined the event. The local police officer even came to help the children cross the road safely.
