A Green Day at School
Fifteen-year-old Leo loves nature and animals. Last month, he watched an interesting documentary about the environment. He learned that farms for cows and sheep use a lot of water and land. This can be very bad for our planet. Because of this, Leo decided to eat less meat and help the earth.
Leo wanted to do something at his high school, too. He talked to his head teacher, Mr. Harris, about starting a project called “Meat-Free Monday”. This means the school café does not serve any meat on the first day of the week. Mr. Harris thought it was a great idea, but he said Leo had to explain the project to the other students.
To do this, Leo made colorful posters and put them in the dining room. He wrote that eating vegetables for just one day saves a lot of water and protects wild animals’ homes. At first, some teenagers were unhappy about the idea. They loved eating burgers and sausages for lunch and didn’t want to change.
However, on the first Meat-Free Monday, the café cooked delicious tomato pasta and vegetable pizzas. The unhappy students tried the new meals and actually loved them! Keeping the River Birds Safe
Fourteen-year-old Harry loves spending time outdoors. His favourite place is the river near his house. He usually goes there after school because he enjoys watching the wildlife. He especially likes the beautiful ducks that live on the water. However, last month, Harry noticed a terrible problem.
Many people visit the river at weekends to catch fish. Sadly, they often leave long pieces of plastic fishing line on the grass. Harry read online that this is extremely dangerous for the ducks. Soon, his best friend, David, started coming with him. Together, they collected three full bags of dangerous plastic in just two weeks!
