A Voice for the Birds

Thirteen-year-old Lily loves spending time in her garden. She enjoys watching the wild birds on the trees. She thinks they look beautiful when they fly across the sky. However, last month, Lily visited a local pet shop to buy food for her cat. There, she saw many beautiful wild birds inside very small cages. They looked incredibly sad.

Lily felt terrible about the birds. Because of this, she decided to write a school project about the problem. She spent two weeks reading books from the library. She learned that wild birds need a lot of space. They must travel long distances every day, and they cannot do this in tiny spaces.

Last Friday, Lily gave a speech to her whole class. At first, she felt quite nervous. She usually hates speaking in front of a lot of people. But she knew the topic was important. She told her classmates that keeping wild birds in homes is wrong. She asked everyone to watch birds outside in the park instead of buying them.

When she finished, all the students clapped loudly. Her science teacher was extremely proud of her hard work. After the lesson, three friends asked to help her start a nature club at school. Lily is happy because her speech really made a difference.

First, I thought about making some cakes to sell at my high school. However, I am terrible at cooking! Instead, I decided to do a long run to get money. I am very good at sports, so it was a better idea. I asked my family, friends, and teachers to give me some money if I finished the run.

Last Sunday morning, I put on my sports shoes and went to the large park in my town. I ran ten kilometres without stopping. It was a very hot day, and I was extremely tired at the end. But when I finished, my parents and all my school friends were waiting for me. They cheered loudly and gave me lots of water.

In total, I collected nearly five hundred pounds. Yesterday, I sent all the money to a special organisation that protects wild rhinos. They sent me a lovely letter to say thank you. I am so happy that I could help these amazing animals. Next year, I am going to organize a bigger sports event for the whole school!
