When Your Mind Goes Blank in a Test

Mateo

When my mind goes completely blank in a test, I never just go to the next page immediately. Instead, I put down any words I can remember about the topic on my paper. Often, seeing these little notes helps the real answer come back to me. If that doesn’t work, I check the rest of the test. Sometimes, a different exercise has some information that reminds me of what I need to say. I don’t bring a water bottle into the exam hall because I might drop it and ruin my work!

Chloe

I hate forgetting things during exams. When it happens, I try not to panic. My trick is to close my textbook in my memory and imagine it. I think about the colors and pictures on the paper I studied at home. Usually, the missing information pops into my head! I never shut my eyes to do this, because the teacher might think I’m sleeping. If I still feel stressed, I take a small bottle out of my bag and have some cold water. It really wakes me up so I can think clearly again.

Youssef

Some students write anything they can think of when they forget, but I just leave the box empty and move on. I prefer to finish all the simple questions first. Then, I have more time to think about the hard ones later. When I am trying to remember a difficult fact, looking at the ceiling doesn’t help. Instead, I keep my face down, shut my eyes for a minute, and take a deep breath. If the test is almost over and I still have no idea, I always guess. It’s better than leaving nothing!
