Memorising Vocabulary with Flashcards

Max

I like holding actual cardboard pieces, so I don’t use programs on my computer. I usually create my vocabulary cards the night before my test. I write the English word on one side and the translation on the back. To organize everything, I use different pens; I write action words in red and things in blue. I don’t have time to make small pictures on them! Because I don’t want to lose my cards, I leave them on my desk at home. In the evening, my older sister holds them up and sees how many I can guess correctly. It is really helpful!

Lily

I prefer writing by hand, not typing on a screen. I begin making my paper cards several weeks before the exam date, so I never feel stressed. I only use a black pencil, but I always add a small picture next to the word to help my memory. Also, I don’t just write the translation. Putting the new term into a full sentence makes it easier to remember how to use it in conversation. I review them alone in my room and I never bring them outside. It is the best way to get a good grade!

Omar

I use a program on my mobile instead of making real cards from paper. It is amazing because I can look at them when I am riding the bus to school or waiting for a train. The app doesn’t let me add images easily, and the screen just shows simple black text, but I don’t mind. I usually download a list right before class. I just match the vocabulary to its meaning without writing extra words. It’s fantastic for independent study, so I don’t need to ask anyone else to test me.

Preparing a Revision Schedule

Tom

Exams make me nervous, but having a good schedule helps. I didn’t know how to start, so my dad sat down with me to organize my days. My calendar is just black and white on my computer, but it works well. The best part is that I don’t just work all day. I always make sure I have an hour to play games or watch TV. I never look at my books before breakfast, because I need to wake up slowly.

Sarah

I am annoyed with myself because I waited until last week to write my timetable. Now I have to read very fast! To make myself feel happier, I bought some bright markers to draw my timetable. It looks beautiful on my wall. I have no free time for hobbies right now, which is really hard. Luckily, my classmates and I go to the library together. Doing the work as a group stops me from feeling too worried about the tests.

Ben

My revision schedule is full, and I feel very stressed. There are ten subjects on my list, and it is impossible to finish everything. Because of this, I always open my notes as soon as I wake up at 6 a.m. I can’t concentrate if anyone else is in the room, so I just stay at my desk alone. My parents tell me to stop and eat, but I usually forget. I just want the exams to be over!

Forgetting Our Homework

Harry

I usually always remember my school tasks, but last weekend my family drove to the countryside to stay with my aunt. Because I wasn’t in my own house, I completely forgot about my studies. I didn’t even have my laptop with me to play video games! When I told Mr. Smith on Monday morning, he was quite unhappy and didn’t smile at all. I said I was very sorry, but he still told me to write two extra pages for tomorrow as a penalty. I will definitely never forget to do it again!

Ben

My books were right there on my desk at home, but I just ignored them. Instead, I spent the whole weekend playing a brilliant new online game with my mates. Suddenly, it was Sunday night and it was too late to start studying! I decided to write our teacher a quick electronic message to explain my mistake and apologise. He thanked me for telling the truth, but I still had to sit at my desk after the bell rang at three o’clock. I couldn’t leave the building until the worksheet was finished!

Charlie

I felt terrible on Monday morning because I had nothing to give the teacher. On Friday afternoon, I went swimming and accidentally left my backpack at the sports centre. It had all my notebooks inside! I was in my own town all weekend, but the pool was closed so I couldn’t get my things. I didn’t send an email because I wanted to speak to the teacher face-to-face. I was really nervous to apologise, but he actually just laughed. He wasn’t cross with me at all, and simply told me to bring the work on Tuesday.
