ANSWER KEY & EXPLANATIONS
1 Correct Answer: (b) will carry
- Explanation: We use “will + base verb” for spontaneous decisions made at the moment of speaking (offering help). (a) is a common mistake; Present Continuous (“am carrying”) is used for pre-planned arrangements, not on-the-spot offers. (c) is a structural error; “will” cannot be followed by an “-ing” verb.
2 Correct Answer: (a) ‘ll open
- Explanation: “‘ll” is the correct contraction for “will” used for an immediate offer. (b) “open” (Present Simple) is a common mistake; it sounds like a general habit rather than an offer. (c) is a structural error; “will” is never followed by “to”.
3 Correct Answer: (c) will get
- Explanation: “Will get” perfectly expresses a spontaneous offer to help a thirsty friend. (a) “am going to get” is a common mistake; “going to” implies you already planned to get the water before you saw your friend. (b) is a structural error; modal verbs like “will” are always followed by the base form, never with an “s”.
4 Correct Answer: (a) ‘ll close
- Explanation: Used to express an immediate reaction to the cold room. (b) “closing” is a common mistake; an “-ing” verb cannot stand alone without a “to be” verb in this context, and it wouldn’t express an offer. (c) is a structural error; “will” takes the base form, not the “-ing” form.
5 Correct Answer: (c) will help
- Explanation: Correct form for an immediate offer of assistance. (a) “help” is a common mistake; the Present Simple states a fact or routine, it does not function as an offer here. (b) is a structural error; do not use “to” after “will”.
6 Correct Answer: (a) will go
- Explanation: The speaker just found out there are no tomatoes, making this a spontaneous decision to help. (b) “am going” is a common mistake, suggesting a prior plan rather than a reaction to the moment. (c) is a structural error; “will” never takes an “s”.
7 Correct Answer: (b) ‘ll reach
- Explanation: Correct contraction and form for offering help. (a) is a structural error; mixing the contraction “‘ll” with an “-ing” verb. (c) “reach” is a common mistake; Present Simple does not convey the intention to offer assistance.
8 Correct Answer: (c) will answer
- Explanation: Correct usage of “will” for a quick decision to help. (a) “answer” is a common mistake; using bare Present Simple sounds like an imperative (command) or routine. (b) is a structural error; adding “to” after a modal verb.
9 Correct Answer: (a) ‘ll wash
- Explanation: A spontaneous offer to relieve a tired friend. (b) “am washing” is a common mistake; it describes an action happening right now or a pre-planned schedule, not an offer. (c) is a structural error; adding “es” to the main verb after “will”.
10 Correct Answer: (b) will open
- Explanation: The correct way to offer to do a physical task for someone right now. (a) “opening” is a common mistake/grammar error; it lacks an auxiliary verb entirely. (c) is a structural error; “will” is followed by the base form, never the past tense “-ed”.
11 Correct Answer: (b) ‘ll show
- Explanation: An immediate offer to provide directions. (a) “show” is a common mistake; it states a fact rather than offering future assistance. (c) is a structural error; unnecessary use of “to”.
12 Correct Answer: (a) will let
- Explanation: Correct form to spontaneously offer an item. (b) is a structural error; “lets” is incorrect after a modal verb. (c) “am letting” is a common mistake; Present Continuous is unnatural for a sudden offer.
13 Correct Answer: (c) ‘ll pay
- Explanation: The speaker decides in that exact second to cover the cost. (a) “pay” is a common mistake; Present Simple expresses habit. (b) is a structural error; “‘ll” cannot be followed by an “-ing” verb.
14 Correct Answer: (a) will turn on
- Explanation: Reacting to the environment by offering to change it. (b) is a structural error; “to” is forbidden after “will”. (c) “am turning on” is a common mistake; it describes what you are currently doing, not offering to do.
15 Correct Answer: (a) ‘ll clean
- Explanation: Correct contraction and base verb for an offer. (b) “clean” is a common mistake; it sounds like a habit (“I clean everyday”) rather than an offer to help now. (c) is a structural error; using a past tense verb (“cleaned”) after “will”.
16 Correct Answer: (b) will drive
- Explanation: A direct, spontaneous offer to provide transport. (a) “am going to drive” is a common mistake; “going to” means you already planned to drive them before you knew their car broke down, which doesn’t fit the context. (c) is a structural error; “will” + “-ing”.
17 Correct Answer: (a) ‘ll take
- Explanation: Offering physical help on the spot. (b) “take” is a common mistake; bare Present Simple does not express an offer. (c) is a structural error; using an infinitive with “to” after a modal.
18 Correct Answer: (c) will bring
- Explanation: Correct grammatical structure to offer medication/water. (a) “am bringing” is a common mistake; implies the action is already in progress. (b) is a structural error; adding “s” to the base verb after “will”.
19 Correct Answer: (b) ‘ll take
- Explanation: Spontaneous offer to babysit so the friend can study. (a) “taking” is a common mistake/grammar error; it cannot stand alone as a predicate. (c) is a structural error; “will” cannot be followed by a past tense verb (“took”).
20 Correct Answer: (a) will give
- Explanation: Reacting to the friend’s bad situation with a sudden offer of a ride. (b) “give” is a common mistake; Present Simple is used for routines. (c) is a structural error; “to” after a modal verb.
GRAMMAR POINTS TO REMEMBER
When to use it:
In English, when you see someone who needs help and you decide to help them at that exact moment, you use the Simple Future tense (Will). We call these “spontaneous decisions” or “on-the-spot offers.”
The Structure:
- Subject + will + base verb (e.g., I will help.)
- Subject + ‘ll + base verb (e.g., I’ll carry. – This contraction is very common in spoken English!)
Important Rules to Remember:
- Never use “to” after “will”. (Say I will open, NOT I will to open).
- Never change the verb after “will”. No “-s”, “-ed”, or “-ing”. Just the basic dictionary form of the verb. (Say I will go, NOT I will goes or I will going).
- Do not use “going to” for spontaneous offers. “Going to” means you planned it yesterday or earlier today. “Will” means you just decided right now because you care!
