Missing the School Bus

Leo

I usually catch the eight o’clock school bus. If I am late and don’t catch it, I always feel really mad at myself! My mother has to work early, so she cannot drive me in her car. Instead, I have to take a taxi. I must use my own pocket money to give to the driver, which I really hate. Luckily, the taxi is very fast. Because of this, I arrive quickly and I am never late for the start of my

morning lessons.

Mila

When I see the yellow bus drive away, I don’t feel angry. I just stay calm. I don’t have enough cash to buy a train ticket, so I always travel on foot. The journey takes almost an hour. Because I am walking, I always arrive at school after 9:30 a.m., so I am never in the classroom when my math teacher begins the morning learning. While I am walking, I always ring my dad on my mobile to explain what happened, so he doesn’t worry about me.

Noah

I am lucky because if I miss the bus, I don’t have to go on foot. The school is too far away for that! My older brother finishes his university classes in the morning, so he always lets me sit in his car and takes me to my school. While we are driving, I write a quick email on my laptop to my history teacher. I do this so she knows I am coming. I never call my parents because they are busy at work.

Studying Vocabulary

Emma

I don’t have much free time at home, so I usually learn new English words during my journey to school. Sitting on the bus gives me twenty minutes every afternoon to look at my screen. I use a really good app that helps me remember things. I don’t like carrying heavy notebooks or writing things down with a pen. I prefer doing everything online. My best friend likes to practise with me on Saturdays, but I am usually too busy to see her then. I prefer to do my learning alone.

David

Remembering long lists of words is hard for me. To make it easier, I always sketch a small image next to every new noun or verb I learn. Seeing the art helps my brain remember! I usually turn my phone off because looking at messages stops me from working. I sleep late, so I never study when I wake up. Instead, I wait until Sunday afternoon to check what I can remember from the week. My older brother always sits with me and asks me questions, which is much better than working by myself.

Sophia

I keep a special notebook just for English. Every time I hear a new phrase, I use my favorite blue pen to put it on the page. I don’t have an app on my device for this, and I am terrible at art, so there are no images in my book! My favourite time to study is immediately after I get out of bed, before I even eat my breakfast. My mind feels very fresh then. I never look at my notes on the train because reading in moving vehicles makes me feel sick.

Helping with the Weekly Groceries

Liam

I always go to the big supermarket with my dad on Saturday afternoons. We don’t use a piece of paper to remember things. Instead, my dad sends me a digital message, and I look at the display to see what we are missing. I never carry the heavy boxes to the car because my dad is much stronger than me. When we finally drive back to our house, it is my task to open all the bags and place the milk and vegetables into the fridge. I also organise the boxes of pasta on the shelves.

Noah

My mom and I do our weekly shop on Sundays. We leave the house at half past six because the store is very quiet then. We never write a list on our mobile phones; we just remember what we need! My mom is great at checking the price tags under the food to make sure we don’t pay too much. Because we buy a lot of juice bottles and potatoes, the plastic bags are not light. I always lift them and take them all the way to our front door.

Oliver

Every week, I walk to the town square with my parents. We don’t go to the large indoor shop. We prefer buying fresh carrots and apples from the farmers’ tables under the sky. I don’t help put the food in the cupboards when we get back, as my older sister does that. However, I enjoy the trip because my parents always let me choose a small chocolate bar or some tasty biscuits just for me. We usually go after lunch, so we don’t have to wake up early.
