A Safe Journey for Frogs

Fourteen-year-old Leo loves walking in the countryside near his home. He enjoys watching insects and birds. However, last spring, he noticed a big problem. A busy road near his house was very dangerous for local frogs. They needed to cross it to reach a small lake, but there were too many fast cars. Leo felt very sad and wanted to change this.

The next day, Leo spoke to his science teacher, Mr Clark. The teacher thought it was a brilliant idea to help the animals. Together, they used the internet to read about special frog tunnels in other countries. After that, they drew a careful plan to make a safe crossing area under the street.

During the weekend, Leo and ten of his classmates worked really hard. They dug a small tunnel under the road and put some rocks inside it. They also put up large, colourful signs next to the road. These signs asked drivers to go slowly because of the animals. It took two days, but the students finally finished the project.

This spring, the new tunnel is a huge success. Hundreds of frogs are using it to get to the water safely. Leo feels incredibly proud of his friends and his hard work. In the future, he hopes to begin a wildlife club at his school to save even more local animals.

The Teenager Saving Our River

Fourteen-year-old Leo has an unusual hobby for a teenager. At weekends, most of his friends enjoy playing computer games or going to the cinema. But Leo prefers spending his time at the river near his house. Two years ago, he saw that the water was full of rubbish and the fish were dying. He decided he had to do something to help.

Every Saturday morning, Leo wakes up early, puts on his old boots, and takes some large plastic bags to the river. He spends three or four hours picking up empty bottles, food boxes, and paper. Sometimes his older sister comes with him, but usually, he works alone. It is a tiring job, especially when it is raining, but Leo doesn’t mind the weather.

Because of Leo’s hard work, the river is a much cleaner place today. The water is clear, and the fish have returned. Last month, he even saw some baby ducks swimming safely. However, there is still a big problem. People continue to throw their rubbish on the grass when they have picnics. This makes Leo feel quite sad.

Next term, Leo is going to start an environmental club at his school. He hopes that his classmates will join him to clean the river together. “If we all pick up just one piece of rubbish, our town will be beautiful and safe for animals,” he says.
