Learning a New Hobby Online

Emma

I decided to learn how to play the guitar when my uncle gave me his old instrument. I didn’t need to spend any cash to begin! At first, it was quite difficult to understand the online teachers. The clips I watch are usually over twenty minutes long. Because my fingers move slowly, I have to press the pause button again and again to copy what the man on the screen is doing. Sometimes I get frustrated when I make mistakes, but I am definitely improving.

David

I really enjoy baking. Before I try making anything, I sit down and view the entire lesson from beginning to end without interrupting it. I prefer watching quick guides that are just two or three minutes, rather than half an hour. The online chef I follow tells great jokes, so I always smile and laugh when I find out how to make a new dish. The best part is the weekend, when I bring the fresh biscuits and cakes to school for my classmates to eat!

Lily

My favourite thing to do in the evening is follow art tutorials on my laptop. To begin this activity, I went to a shop in town to get some special paints and large pieces of paper. The teachers in the videos are quite serious, so nobody laughs, but they explain things very clearly. Sitting at my desk and mixing colours makes me feel incredibly calm, especially when I have had a busy day at school. I never show my pictures to anyone; I just keep them hidden in my room.

Making a Short Documentary Film

Leo

For my media project, I decided to do the work with my friend Tom from my maths lesson. We wanted to film people playing sports in the park. However, it rained very heavily all weekend, so we couldn’t go outside. Instead, we made a video about cooking a meal indoors. My dad helped us make the food, but he didn’t speak on camera. After we finished, our teacher watched our movie. She loved it and gave us a hundred percent, the top result in the room!

Maria

I made a documentary about the history of my town. My grandfather has lived here his whole life. I sat in his living room and he gave answers to all the things I wanted to know about his past. I used my own smartphone to record everything, so I didn’t need any special equipment. Filming was fun, but choosing the best clips and making the movie on my laptop was really hard work! I filmed some pet cats in his garden too. I was happy with my project, even though my teacher didn’t give me an ‘A’.

Sam

I love spending time in the forest, so my video was about the bears and foxes that live there. The sun was shining all day, which was lucky! I don’t own any expensive video equipment, so my teacher let me take a recording device from the media classroom for the weekend. I didn’t want to do the project with anyone else, so I went completely by myself. Putting all the video parts together on my computer was actually quite simple. I just added some nice music and it was ready.

Filming Videos Indoors

Ryan

Making videos inside can be difficult. Having great audio is the most important thing for me. I use an old microphone that my dad gave me, so I didn’t buy a new one. It picks up every little sound! Because of this, I always switch off my desk fan before I start talking so my voice is perfectly clear. For lighting, I use two very big lamps. They make my face look great on camera, but my bedroom gets incredibly hot after just ten minutes! I usually have to open the door to let some cool air inside.

Mia

I love shooting indoor videos for my channel. For the best picture, I don’t use large white lamps because they cost too much. Instead, I pull the curtains and sit right next to my big window. The sun makes everything look natural and bright. Behind me, I put small lamps that show pink and green, which looks really cool! To get clean audio, I have to be careful about noise. I record all my clips at six in the morning before the rest of my family gets out of bed. It is completely quiet then, though I sometimes need a warm sweater!

Leo

When I first started making videos, my bedroom was always completely dark. I quickly learned that nobody stays on your channel if they can’t see your face! Viewers will just click away. So, I bought some great ring lights. My room has very small windows, so I cannot use the sun at all. Clear sound is also a big deal. For a long time, my voice sounded terrible. Luckily, last week I paid for a brilliant little mic that connects straight to my phone. Now, my followers can hear every single word I say, even when I film in the busy afternoon!
