The Teenager Deciding the Future of Driving
Fifteen-year-old Leo loves everything about cars. His father drives an old traditional car that uses petrol. Leo enjoys travelling in it, but recently, he started a school project about electric vehicles. He wanted to find out which type of car is actually better for everyday life.
First, Leo looked at the costs and the environment. He discovered that filling a traditional car with expensive petrol costs a lot of money. On the other hand, electricity is much cheaper. He also read that electric cars are cleaner for the environment because they do not produce dirty air.
Next, Leo compared the driving experience. His father’s car is very noisy, and Leo always thought fast cars should make a loud sound. However, his uncle recently bought an electric car and took Leo for a drive. The battery-powered engine was incredibly quiet. It felt strange at first, but Leo found it very relaxing. The only problem was that charging the battery takes much longer than putting petrol in a normal car.
Finally, Leo shared his project with his classmates. He explained the advantages and disadvantages of both machines. Although electric cars are currently more expensive to buy, Leo has made a decision. He is going to save his money, and he hopes to buy an electric vehicle when he gets his driving licence in a few years.

The Teenager Learning How Fast Cars Work
Fifteen-year-old Alex has always loved fast cars. Last month, his science teacher asked the class to write a long school project. While his friends chose to write about animals or plants, Alex decided to research something different. He wanted to understand the engineering behind the fastest vehicles in the world.
Alex spent two weeks reading books and looking at websites. He learned that a car’s shape is extremely important. He found out that sports cars are very low to the ground so they can move through the air quickly. He also read about high-performance engines and how they give the cars amazing power.
For his project, Alex didn’t just write a text. He spent his whole weekend building a small plastic model of a German sports car. He used it to show his classmates how the wide tyres and large brakes keep the driver safe at high speeds. His desk was very messy, but the model looked fantastic.
When Alex showed his project to the class, his teacher was very impressed. She gave him the best mark in the school. Now, Alex knows exactly what he wants to do in the future. He hopes to study engineering at university and build real sports cars when he is older.
1 Why did Alex choose his project topic?
(A) He wanted to find out how the quickest cars are built.
(B) His science teacher asked the class to write about it.
(C) He chose to write about animals or plants.
2 What did Alex learn about sports cars?
(A) He spent two weeks reading books and looking at websites.
(B) The design of the vehicle helps it to travel fast.
(C) He learned how to make high-performance engines.
3 What did Alex do for his class presentation?
(A) He just wrote a text for his science project.
(B) He kept the driver safe at high speeds.
(C) He created a physical object to explain his ideas.
4 How did the project affect Alex?
(A) It helped him decide on his future studies and job.
(B) He was very impressed by his science teacher.
(C) He gave his friends the best mark in the school.

A Passion for Car Factories
Fifteen-year-old Tom has a different hobby from his classmates. Most teenagers his age spend their evenings playing video games or watching funny videos on their phones. However, Tom prefers sitting in the living room and turning on the television. He absolutely loves watching long documentaries about how famous luxury cars are made.
Tom finds the car factories incredibly interesting. In these programmes, he can see the whole process from the beginning to the end. First, he watches workers put the heavy metal parts together. Then, he loves seeing the bright paint go on the cars. He thinks the large robots that help the workers are the most exciting things to watch.
Last Sunday, Tom watched a very special programme about an expensive Italian sports car. He was surprised because the factory doesn’t use many machines. Instead, a small team of people builds the engine by hand. Tom learned that it takes more than four weeks to finish just one vehicle! His friends couldn’t believe it when he told them.
Because of these documentaries, Tom now knows exactly what he wants to do in the future. Next year, he is going to choose science and maths for his school exams. When he leaves school, his dream is to study engineering at university. One day, he hopes to travel to Europe and get a job in a real car factory.
