Mark: Hi everyone! My name’s Mark, and I’m here to tell you about a mountain cycling excursion I recently took part in. I’ve always been a fan of cycling around my local city, but navigating undulating, mountainous terrain was a completely new experience for me, and I was eager to take in some spectacular natural vistas.
Before we set off, I had a lot of apprehensions. I thought the most challenging part of the trip would be dealing with the high altitude, or perhaps the rocky, uneven paths. However, my biggest worry turned out to be my fitness level, which was tested almost immediately on the very first climb. I quickly realised that mountain biking demands a lot more stamina than riding on flat city roads!
When it came to packing, I probably brought a lot of unnecessary stuff. I packed a heavy waterproof jacket, thinking it’d be freezing at the top, and some expensive sunglasses. But the one item I couldn’t have survived without was my padded shorts. They absolutely saved me on those bumpy tracks, and I highly recommend them to anyone trying this sport.
We started our ascent early in the morning. I had assumed the first few kilometres would consist of the open, grassy meadows I’d seen in the promotional brochures. Instead, we found ourselves navigating a dense pine forest, where the air was incredibly fresh and the scent of the trees was quite overpowering. It was a beautiful way to begin the journey.
As we climbed higher, the undulating terrain finally opened up. I was hoping we’d catch a glimpse of the famous suspension bridge that the region is known for, but the guides took us on a slightly different route. We ended up stumbling upon a magnificent waterfall instead. The sound of the crashing water echoing against the rocks was truly spectacular, and we stopped to take plenty of photos.
The wildlife in the area was another highlight. We’d been warned about bears in the region, so we made sure to make plenty of noise as we rode. We didn’t spot any of those, unfortunately, but we did come across a herd of wild horses grazing peacefully near the trail. I’d never seen anything quite like it in the wild before.
By midday, we were absolutely starving after all that pedalling. The guides had promised us a hot meal later in the afternoon at a mountain lodge, so for the time being, we just relied on the energy bars we had tucked into our backpacks to keep us going. They were just enough to give us a much-needed sugar boost.
The weather in the mountains can be highly unpredictable. I had fully anticipated heavy rain, as the local weather forecast had suggested the night before. But what really slowed our progress was a sudden, strong wind that swept through the valley and made pedalling utterly exhausting.
Eventually, reaching the summit was a massive relief. There was an old wooden cabin nearby where climbers sometimes sleep, but the actual peak was marked by an ancient stone tower. We stood up there, catching our breath, and the panoramic view from the edge of the mountain was simply breathtaking.
Of course, going down is always the fun part, though it requires intense concentration. You might think the suspension is the most critical component on a steep descent, but actually, it’s your brakes that do all the hard work keeping you safe on those dramatic drops. You have to learn exactly when to squeeze them.
Looking back, the excursion gave me more than just great photos and sore legs. It didn’t significantly improve my technical riding skills, to be honest, but it gave a massive boost to my confidence. Pushing myself to my physical limits in such a beautiful place was amazing, and I’m already planning my next off-road adventure.

Liam: Hi everyone, my name is Liam, and I’m here to talk to you about my absolute favourite pastime: hiking. More specifically, I’ll be sharing why I’ve decided to swap traditional sports for an upcoming mountain trail expedition.
Growing up, I was always encouraged to play team sports, just like a lot of kids. My dad really wanted me to get into rugby, which I tried for a bit, but it was actually basketball that I spent most of my teenage years playing. I was on the school team and loved the competitive nature of it at the time.
My transition to hiking happened quite unexpectedly. A friend of mine invited me to an indoor climbing wall, and I honestly thought that would be my brand new hobby. However, a weekend trip to a nearby national park completely changed my mind, and I fell in love with mountain trails almost instantly. Being surrounded by nature was a revelation.
People often ask me why I prefer hiking over other individual sports like running or cycling. While running is undeniably great for your cardiovascular health, I found it really tough on my knees and joints. With hiking, navigating uneven terrain means I’ve noticed a massive improvement in my balance, which is something you just don’t always get from pounding the pavements or working out on flat surfaces.
But the benefits aren’t just physical. I used to go to the local gym after work to relieve stress, but staring at a blank wall or a TV screen wasn’t really doing it for me anymore. Being out in the fresh air on a mountain ridge gives me an incredible sense of freedom that no indoor sport can ever match. It really clears my head.
Because I enjoy it so much, I’ve decided to take on a massive challenge next month. At first, I seriously considered tackling the famous Appalachian Trail in the US, but I’ve finally settled on a route through the Swiss Alps because the scenery there is simply iconic, and it’s always been a dream of mine to go there.
Preparing for this expedition has been intense. Most people assume the steep climbs will be the hardest part, and they certainly do require a lot of stamina. Actually, dealing with the altitude is what I am most concerned about, as the air gets pretty thin up there and it can really affect your breathing.
Gear is also crucial for mountain trails, and you have to pack smart. I’ve already got a top-of-the-range tent and some incredibly sturdy boots from my previous hikes. But the one thing I’ve just invested a lot of money in is a high-quality sleeping bag, because the temperatures can drop dramatically at night, even in the middle of summer.
One of the things I’m most looking forward to on this trip is the wildlife. The guidebooks say you might spot eagles soaring above the peaks, which would be amazing. However, my main goal is to catch a glimpse of the wild goats that navigate the rocky cliffs so effortlessly. I’ve brought some good binoculars just in case.
As for where we’ll be staying, camping is a popular choice for many hikers on this route. But to save us carrying heavy gear every single day, my group has opted to sleep in traditional wooden huts that are scattered along the trail. They offer hot meals, too, which will be a lifesaver.
Once I finish this trek, I don’t plan on stopping. Some hikers I know go on to write a book about their experiences, or set up a travel blog to document their journeys. I’m actually hoping to organise a photo exhibition to share the incredible landscapes I’m bound to capture on my camera. I can’t wait to get started!
