Max’s Midnight Mistake
Max, a fifteen-year-old high school student, was on a school trip in the mountains. On the last night, he was watching a funny film in his room. At midnight, he felt incredibly hungry. He decided to go to the machines downstairs to buy some chocolate and a cold drink.
He stepped out of his room and quickly closed the heavy wooden door behind him. Suddenly, Max realised something terrible. His room key was still on his bed! He tried to open the door, but it was locked. He couldn’t ask his friends for help because all his classmates were sleeping. Max felt very worried.
He walked down the stairs to the hotel reception, but the lights were off. The receptionist was not there. Then, Max saw a man cleaning the floor in the restaurant. Max explained his problem to the kind cleaner. The man smiled and said he had a special master key for all the rooms.

My first time in a hostel
Last month, I travelled to Berlin for a short holiday. As a student, I didn’t have much money, so I booked a bed in a youth hostel. When I arrived, I felt quite nervous. I usually have my own bedroom at home, but here I had to share a room with five strangers.
When I opened the door to my room, I saw the other people. They looked very strange! They were all wearing funny animal hats. One boy explained that they were going to a special music festival the next day. They were eating some pizza and immediately asked me to sit down and eat with them.
We stayed awake until midnight playing a silly board game. It was difficult to understand each other because they were from Spain and my Spanish is terrible. However, we used our mobile phones to translate words and drew pictures on paper. It was extremely funny, and we laughed all night.
The next morning, I woke up late and the Spanish group was already gone. I felt a bit sad that I didn’t say goodbye. Before this trip, I was worried about sleeping in hostels, but now I think it is a brilliant way to meet interesting people!
