Mia’s Zero-Waste Suitcase

Sixteen-year-old Mia is going on a summer holiday to the seaside next week. She loves making videos for her friends to watch online. Recently, she saw a TV programme about the terrible plastic rubbish on our beaches. She felt very sad and decided to help the environment by packing a zero-waste suitcase. She wanted to show her classmates how to do it.

First, Mia filmed her bathroom bag. Many tourists usually buy small plastic bottles of shampoo for their holidays. Instead of doing this, Mia packed a hard bar of soap for her hair and body. She also showed the camera her new wooden toothbrush because she threw away her old plastic one.

Next, Mia talked about the journey to the hotel. Buying food at the airport always means bringing lots of plastic wrappers with you. To stop this, Mia prepared some delicious cheese sandwiches and put them in a lovely cloth bag. She also packed a heavy metal water bottle to fill up before she gets on the plane.

Max’s Quiet Mountain

Max is a fifteen-year-old student who lives near the beautiful Blue Mountains. He often goes hiking there at the weekend. Recently, Max noticed a big problem. The mountains are becoming very popular, and the new visitors talk and laugh very loudly. All this noise is scaring the local animals, like the birds and deer, making them run away.

Max decided he needed to do something to help the wildlife. He had a clever idea to make signs to warn people. He asked his art teacher, Mr. Davies, for some wood and paint. Together, they designed beautiful signs with pictures of sleeping animals and the words “Shh! Animals are resting.”

On Saturday morning, Max and two classmates walked up the mountain paths. They put the wooden signs on big trees near the walking routes. At first, Max was quite worried. He thought that the tourists wouldn’t read the information or just wouldn’t care.

However, a few weeks later, the mountain was a different place. The visitors saw the pictures and started to speak quietly. Because it was so peaceful, the deer and birds came back to the paths.
