Bringing the Internet to Older Generations

Fourteen-year-old Toby has always loved computers and technology. Last year, his grandfather got a new smartphone for his birthday. However, his grandfather didn’t know how to make video calls to the family and felt quite sad. Toby spent a few hours helping him. After that, Toby understood that many older people need help with modern technology.

Toby decided to start a free class at the local library. Every Saturday morning, he teaches elderly people how to use their mobile phones and the internet. He shows them how to send emails, take photos, and find news online. At first, many of the older students feel afraid of breaking their expensive phones, so Toby helps them to relax.

Teaching the classes isn’t always easy. Toby has to be very patient and explain everything slowly. But he really loves seeing the results. For example, an 80-year-old lady called Mrs. Higgins recently learned how to use a shopping app. Now, she orders her food online and doesn’t have to carry heavy bags from the supermarket anymore.
