Cleaning Up Our Beach

Tom

I usually spend my Saturdays playing video games, but last week my dad drove me to the coast to join a clean-up group. He didn’t stay, so I worked alone. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw all the plastic on the sand. There were hundreds of bottles and cups everywhere! It wasn’t hard work, and the weather was beautiful. We picked up a lot of things, and the beach looked lovely at the end of the day. I feel so proud of what we did, so I’ve already decided to go back and do it all over again next month.

Bella

I really care about the environment, so I joined the beach clean-up on Sunday morning. I didn’t want to go by myself, so I brought my cousin along to help me. Before we started, the organizers gave us thick gloves to wear so we wouldn’t cut our fingers on sharp plastic. We just found boring things, mostly food wrappers and old bags. While we were working, I chatted with some other students from my town. We had a lot of fun, and we are going to the cinema together soon. Sadly, I can’t go to the next clean-up because of exams.

Dan

Our teacher told us about the community group, and I thought it was a great idea. There wasn’t as much rubbish as I thought there would be, because another team cleaned the area yesterday. However, I forgot to bring my own gloves, so picking up the dirty plastic wasn’t very nice! The best part was when I pulled a strange, old wooden box out of the water. It looked like something from a pirate ship! After carrying heavy bags of rubbish all afternoon, my arms and legs really ached. When I got home, I slept for ten hours!

Saving Electricity at Home

Leo

Last month, the document showing what we owed for power was really expensive. My parents were shocked! After that, I promised to be more careful about electricity. It is actually not easy to keep it in my mind to press the off button on my computer when I finish my homework. I still enjoy spending hours in front of the TV, so I haven’t changed that habit. Some of my classmates say they use less energy to help the planet, but for me, it’s just about keeping our costs down.

Maya

I never leave my bedroom without hitting the light switch. I always remember, but I usually get quite cross with my brother and mum because they walk out of rooms and leave everything running! To fix this, we decided to have a contest last week to see who could be the most careful. I won easily! To win, I chose to read books instead, so I don’t turn on the television as

often as I used to. It’s quite a fun way to live.

Toby

Turning off machines is really important to me because protecting the world around us is something we should all try to do. For my family, it is not just about keeping money in our pockets. In the evenings, we often light some candles while we eat dinner rather than using the ceiling bulbs. It looks beautiful! We don’t make it into a fun competition; it is just normal for us. My dad sometimes forgets to shut down his laptop, but I don’t get angry, I just do it for him.

School Recycling Programs

Liam

My school really wants us to keep the environment clean. Our teachers started a fun contest this term. Every class tries to beat the other groups by finding more empty drinks and old homework sheets. Everyone is trying hard to win! I actually have a special task. Every Friday afternoon, my friend and I empty the small boxes and carry everything to the big recycling trucks outside. It is heavy work, but I enjoy it. My friend Diego says his school gives out tickets for helping, but we don’t get anything like that. We just want to help the planet.

Sofia

At my school, we do lots of interesting activities to save the planet. We don’t just put things in the bin. In our drawing classes, we used empty water bottles and old magazines to build amazing models. I love doing that! Also, I make sure my parents don’t throw things away at home. My family drinks lots of lemonade, so I always pack the empty plastic in my backpack to drop off at our school’s collection area. We also have a special bin for paper, but the teachers are the ones who take it outside, not the students.

Diego

We have changed a lot of things at my school to be greener. Recently, the school spent money on bright green and blue baskets for the halls. Now, it is much easier to know where to put your rubbish. To save trees, we often do our maths homework on the back of old letters and notes. It is a great idea! Our headteacher also wants everyone to help. If we fill the baskets quickly, he hands out free cinema tickets to say thank you. We don’t have competitions between classes, but everyone tries their best anyway.
