Buying Medicine at the Chemist’s
Oliver
I woke up with a terrible pain in my neck, so I walked to the pharmacy near my school. I didn’t know what to get. Luckily, the friendly assistant listened to my problem and told me exactly which pills to choose. She was really useful! While I was there, I also paid for a new toothbrush because I needed one for my holiday. The medicine was quite sweet and nice to drink. Sadly, I still felt a bit unwell the next day, but I could finally talk to my friends again.
Mia
My local chemist’s is on my street, so it only takes me two minutes to get there from my front door. Yesterday, I really needed something for my dry throat. The shop was incredibly busy! There were so many customers that it took me twenty minutes to give the money to the cashier. I only got a small bottle of cough liquid, nothing extra. I drank a spoonful immediately. To my surprise, the pain completely disappeared in half an hour! I phoned my mum to tell her the great news.
Sam
When I couldn’t swallow my breakfast, my older sister drove me straight to the large pharmacy in town. We didn’t need to ask anyone what to buy because we already knew the best brand. There was nobody else waiting, so we paid and left immediately. The instructions said I had to take the yellow medicine twice a day. It worked well, but it was really horrible to drink! It had a terrible bitter feeling in my mouth. Next time, I will look for one with a nice fruit taste instead.

What to do when you are ill
Ben
When I get a bad cough and my head feels hot, I usually stay in the living room. I don’t go to bed to watch movies; I just sleep on the sofa. My dad always cooks a big bowl of chicken soup for me. It is exactly what I need to feel stronger. I try to drink hot water with lemon, but I never put sugar or honey in it. Also, I hate swallowing pills, so I only go to the pharmacy if I am really, really sick. I just rest and wait to get better.
Sarah
If I wake up feeling very warm and coughing loudly, I stay home from school. To help my throat, I boil water and mix it with something sweet from bees. It works perfectly! My mum usually brings me medicine from the chemist, but I also use a special tool to measure my fever every two hours. Even though I feel cold, I always pull the glass on my window back. I think it is very important to have a clean breeze blowing through the room when you have a virus.
Lucas
Getting a high temperature is awful. I usually feel freezing, so I keep my bedroom windows completely closed to stop the wind. The best way for me to rest is pulling the blankets up and putting comedies on my laptop screen. Laughing helps me forget my cough! I check my heat once in the morning, but then I just go to sleep. If I don’t feel normal again after 48 hours, I make an appointment at the medical centre. It is better to get professional advice if the virus doesn’t leave quickly.

Kitchen Accidents
Max
Yesterday was my parents’ anniversary, so I decided to make them spicy chicken and tacos. I was chopping some jalapeños and red chilies because my family loves fiery heat! I wanted to go fast, but the knife slipped and I sliced my finger. It hurt a lot! I didn’t need to visit the hospital, but my older brother heard me shout. He ran into the kitchen and cleaned the cut for me. I still managed to complete the dinner, and it tasted amazing.
Lily
I usually help my dad prepare dinner on Fridays. Last week, I was slicing some carrots for a nice hot soup. I wanted to check a message from my friend, so I stared at my mobile display while I was still holding the knife. That was a bad idea! I got a deep cut on my hand. My dad pressed a clean towel on it, but the blood wouldn’t stop. He finally drove me to the medical centre. A nurse fixed it, and we bought pizzas on the way home!
Owen
I am not very good at cooking, but I tried to make a simple salad last night. I didn’t look at any recipe videos online, I just started chopping tomatoes. Suddenly, I dropped the knife and it caught the end of my finger. I quickly ran to the bathroom and found a long plaster to wrap tightly around the injury. I was perfectly fine and didn’t need a nurse, but I felt too nervous to continue in the kitchen. My mum had to prepare the food instead!
