Keeping in Touch with Family Abroad
Alice
My aunt lives in Spain, and I love talking to her. Because I am at school all week, I usually ring her on Sunday mornings. Her internet is very fast, so I can always see her perfectly. During our conversations, we don’t speak English. Instead, I try to talk to her in Spanish. It is a great way to get better at it for my school exams. I always feel happy after we talk. The only problem is that sometimes I have so much homework that I don’t remember to phone her at our usual time!
Ben
My grandfather moved to Australia last year. At first, he didn’t know how to turn on his laptop’s camera or download the right software. I had to explain everything to him step by step, but now he is really good at it! He is retired and has lots of free time, so he never forgets to phone me. We usually chat on Wednesday evenings. We talk about my school and his new house. I really miss him, so I always feel a bit sad when we have to close the app and say goodbye.
Clara
I video call my older cousin in Canada twice a month. He works with computers, so he knows everything about new apps and software. We don’t use our calls to study a different language; we just speak our own language and have fun. In fact, we love playing chess and other board games on the internet while we talk. It is a brilliant way to spend time together. Unfortunately, the connection between our countries isn’t always strong. Because of this, the video is often dark and stops moving, which makes it hard to look at his face.

Sharing Photos Online
Alex
I love taking photos when I go out. Putting them on social media is fun because my classmates always write nice things about my clothes or my hair. Hearing those words makes me feel great! However, I have one big problem. I usually take a hundred pictures, and I need an hour to pick the best one to put on the internet! I am not worried if people I don’t know see my pictures, so my page is open for everyone to look at.
Bella
I use social media a lot. Last year, my phone fell in the water and broke. Luckily, all my favourite pictures were already saved on the app, so I didn’t lose them! When I take a picture with my mates, I always ask if they are happy with it before I upload it. I don’t share them in emails. One bad thing is that I sometimes feel sad when I see pictures of my classmates on amazing holidays. It makes my own weekend seem very boring!
Chris
I don’t like sharing my life on social media apps. I think it is a bit dangerous, and I don’t want people I haven’t met looking at my personal moments. Instead, if I have a nice picture from a birthday party, I use messages to send it straight to my grandparents. I never upload it for everyone to see. Also, I don’t spend time picking the perfect picture. I just take a quick photo and put my phone away so I can enjoy the party.

Making Weekend Plans
Toby
I use a popular smartphone program to chat with my fifteen classmates. I spend a lot of time typing long texts to make plans. When we meet in the busy town center, I always share my real-time position on the map so they can find me easily. To decide where to eat, I love making a little quiz in the group chat so my mates can pick their favorite option. It is also great because I can send long movies of our weekend football matches without any problems. It is a fantastic application.
Elena
Organizing a weekend trip with twelve friends can be difficult. Last month, I deleted my old chat program and downloaded a new one because the previous application took ages to open. The new one is brilliant. I hate typing letters on my small screen when I am walking. Instead, I just speak into my phone and send audio recordings to the group. My friends often send me videos of their pets or maps of nice places. My phone makes a loud noise all day long with notifications, but I don’t mind!
Lucas
My friends and I love going to the cinema on Saturdays. We use a group chat to choose what to see. The best thing is that this software doesn’t cost a single penny to download. When twenty people are messaging at the same time, it can get very noisy. That is why I always turn off the alert sounds so my device stays completely silent while I am studying. We don’t use quizzes; we just write short text notes to make our decisions together. Some friends send voice notes, but I prefer reading words.
