Building a Volcano Model

Liam

I wanted to make a really big volcano for the school science fair. I didn’t want to buy expensive things from a shop, so I looked in our cupboards. I found an empty plastic bottle, some old newspapers, and baking soda for cooking. My older brother is good at science, so he gave me a hand with mixing everything together. It was great fun! I painted it dark brown and bright red to make it look like a real mountain. I didn’t take home the winner’s cup, but the teacher said my project was fantastic.

Tara

To build my volcano, I bought special clay from an art shop instead of using stuff for cooking. I wanted to do it all by myself without asking my parents. I didn’t know how to make the fire come out, so I found a short film on the web and copied the steps. However, nothing happened when I tried it the first time! I added more powder, and then it exploded everywhere! There was red liquid all over my carpet and bed. It took me hours to clean my bedroom!

Chen

Everyone at the science fair made brown and grey mountains, but I wanted mine to look completely different. So, I used bright blue and pink for my model! I didn’t search for ideas on my laptop because I already knew exactly what to build. I put it together very carefully, and when it was time to show the teacher, it erupted perfectly straight away. There was no mess at all. The judges loved how creative it was, and I got first place! I was so happy and proud of my work.

Changing Classrooms

Leo

At my school, we only have three minutes to move to our next subject. I always feel nervous that the bell will ring before I find my seat. It doesn’t help that my backpack is completely full of big dictionaries and folders for every subject. I can’t leave them in my locker! Also, I often stay behind for a minute to clean the board or collect papers for my maths teacher. I usually see my friends in the corridors, but there is no time to stop and talk to them, or even to enjoy a biscuit!

Mia

I actually love the short breaks between our subjects. I am so glad we don’t have to stay in the same chair for the whole morning! It is really nice to stand up and move my legs. The corridors are always very busy, which makes it the perfect time to talk with my friends and share stories before the next teacher arrives. I never worry about the time, because my classes are very close together. We don’t need to go out into the playground unless it’s the lunch break.

Toby

Our school is huge, so going from history to science is a long journey. I often have to leave the main building and cross the sports field to reach the science rooms. I even do this when it rains! Luckily, we get ten minutes to change rooms. I use this time to quickly finish an apple or some crisps so I am not hungry later. Our teachers don’t ask us to clean up, which is good. We just grab our notebooks, which aren’t heavy to carry, and go. I usually walk alone and listen to music.

School Cooking Classes

Max

I decided to take the school cooking lessons to learn how to make my own lunches. The instructor is fantastic. He speaks slowly, and what he tells us to do is never hard to understand. I learned how to make pizza, which is my favorite, although we did a chocolate dish once too. Sometimes I prepare food for my little sister on Tuesdays. The only rule my parents have is about the mess. So, I always wash the plates and wipe the desks when I am done.

Lily

I never really wanted to learn about food. I only started going to these lessons because my best mate didn’t want to go alone. Now, I really love it! We make simple meals like pasta and soup. I wanted to practice at home, but we didn’t have the right things. So, my mum bought me a special frying pan and some good knives. I don’t want to study cooking next year, but I’m glad I know how to make my own dinner.

Omar

The school kitchen is amazing, and I have met lots of nice people there. We learned how to make lots of main meals, but I really love putting sugar and flour together to bake biscuits and cakes. It can make the room very dirty, though! Now, every Sunday, I stay at home and prepare a big meal for my mum and dad to eat. I enjoy it so much that I plan to put my name down for the level two course next autumn.
