Important Foreign Languages
Mateo
I am learning French as my second foreign language. After I finish school, I plan to study at a college far away in Paris. I also hope to explore lots of different countries and see famous places just for fun. Some people learn languages to watch movies, but I never watch them. My parents and brothers cannot speak French, so I usually practise with my classmates. The grammar is very hard, but I study every day after my weekend job as a waiter. I know it will be an amazing adventure!
Elena
I am studying Spanish. It is a very famous language, with millions of people using it every day. My main reason for choosing it is because I want to chat with my grandparents. They live in Madrid and do not speak much English. I visit them on holiday, but I do not travel to other places. I also really enjoy watching television shows and listening to pop singers from Spain. My classes at my local school are quite difficult, but understanding the culture makes the hard lessons much more fun.
Lucas
I decided to learn German. English was my first foreign language and it was really hard for me. However, German is actually much simpler for me to understand. I am not learning it to speak with my family, because we all just speak Italian at home. I believe knowing German means it will be easier to find a great job in a big international company. I want to earn a lot of money when I am older! I sometimes listen to German songs for practice, but I prefer reading news articles.

School Orchestra
Leo
I play the violin in the school orchestra. I didn’t have to spend any money on it because it actually belonged to my uncle. He gave it to me when he stopped playing. I play it every evening from Monday to Friday, but I always take a break from it on Saturdays and Sundays. I enjoy making music with the other students. However, whenever we have a big show for our parents, I get very worried just before we start. Once the music begins, I’m fine! My sister plays the piano, but I am happy with the violin and wouldn’t want to change.
Mia
I chose the flute because it is small and easy to put in my bag. I saved my pocket money for a year to get a really nice one! I decided to enter the school orchestra because a girl in my class was already a member. We get on really well, and it is a great way to be together more often. I get a lot of homework during the week, so I only have time to play my flute on Saturdays and Sundays. Unlike some people, I never feel frightened when we play in front of a large audience!
Sam
I play the cello. It is a beautiful instrument, but it weighs a lot! My dad has to drive me to school on orchestra days because it makes my arms too tired if I walk with it. I really enjoy the music we play, but my teacher says my skills are not improving very fast. She is right because I don’t play it enough at home. I definitely need to spend more hours doing that! I don’t know many people in the orchestra yet, but everyone is nice. One day, I would love to try the drums, too.

Learning to Code
Alex
In my IT class, I am learning a simple language called Scratch. I am building an adventure where players control a little robot that jumps over things. I have to type a lot of instructions on the keyboard, but it is really fun. It is quite easy to see if I typed something wrong because the robot just stops moving. I enjoy this class so much that next year, I hope to try Python. My teacher says that is what real software engineers use!
Ben
I am not making a video game like the other students. Instead, I am building a smart app that automatically puts words together to create short stories and articles. I actually began thinking about this idea during the summer holidays, long before our IT lessons started. My older brother plays a lot of computer games, but he has no idea how I do this! Sometimes the computer makes funny sentences, but I love watching my software generate new content all by itself.
Charlie
We only began our coding projects last week, but I am already making a useful calendar app for mobile phones. Writing the instructions is okay, but figuring out why it doesn’t work takes a very long time! Fortunately, my aunt builds websites for her job, and she looks at my screen when I am stuck. When my app is completely finished, I hope people will pay to download it from an online store. It would be amazing to become a rich teenager!
