Working as a corporate lawyer, my mind used to be constantly racing. I desperately needed a way to switch off, but typical stress-relief methods like yoga never really worked for me. Had a colleague not suggested taking lunchtime walks in the local city park, I would undoubtedly have suffered from severe burnout. Initially, I was highly sceptical; I couldn’t fathom how staring at pigeons would help. However, once I actually paid attention, I was absolutely staggered by the sheer biodiversity thriving amidst the concrete jungle. I spotted herons, woodpeckers, and even a kingfisher! It was a massive eye-opener. I suddenly realised I had spent my entire life taking these magnificent creatures for granted, completely oblivious to their complex daily routines. Now, stepping away from my desk to observe a robin diving into a pond is the ultimate antidote to my hectic schedule. It forces me to be present and puts my trivial office problems into sharp perspective.

For a long time, I wrongly assumed birdwatching was a solitary, purely visual activity. My perspective shifted entirely when I joined a local ornithology group. The experienced members taught me that identifying species is actually more about tuning in to their unique melodies than spotting them through binoculars. Learning to distinguish between the cheerful trill of a blackbird and the harsh call of a crow completely revolutionised my walks in the woods. Furthermore, this hobby has profoundly deepened my respect for the natural world as a whole. I began to see how everything is delicately intertwined; a decline in certain insect populations immediately impacts the birds that rely on them for nourishment. It was a sobering realisation that the food chain is incredibly fragile. I now pay just as much attention to the flora and insects in my neighbourhood, as they are the fundamental building blocks that sustain the beautiful birds I love watching.

What initially drew me to this pastime was the sheer challenge of it. It’s certainly not a hobby for the impatient! You often have to remain absolutely motionless for hours on end, hidden in a damp hide, just to catch a fleeting glimpse of a rare sparrow. Strangely enough, I find that enforced stillness incredibly therapeutic; it clears my head like nothing else. I’ve also become somewhat obsessed with logging my discoveries. Systematically cataloguing the date, time, and specific markings of each bird I encounter brings me an enormous amount of satisfaction. My most mind-blowing discovery, however, was learning about the astonishing journeys some of these tiny creatures undertake. I had absolutely no idea that the swallows visiting my local reserve had flown thousands of miles all the way from Southern Africa! Understanding the phenomenal endurance required for these annual migrations has given me a profound new respect for the resilience of nature.

I originally bought a high-spec camera with a telephoto lens to pursue my passion for landscape photography. However, while waiting for the perfect sunset one evening, I started snapping pictures of a nearby owl, and I was instantly hooked. As my portfolio of bird portraits grew, so did my curiosity about their habitats. During my research, I was devastated to read that the population of a specific native finch had plummeted dramatically due to urban development, pushing it to the brink of dying out locally. This alarming fact spurred me into action. I decided to completely overhaul my own backyard, replacing my neat, sterile lawn with native wildflowers and berry-producing shrubs to create a safe haven for foraging birds. Witnessing a flock of those threatened finches finally return to feed in my garden last spring was arguably the most rewarding experience of my life. It proved that individual actions can indeed support local biodiversity.

Turning the Tide: Rescuing Our Marine Wildlife

Last summer, while scuba diving off the coast, I encountered a heart-breaking scene that has stayed with me ever since. A young sea turtle was hopelessly entangled in a ‘ghost net’ – a huge mass of discarded commercial fishing gear. The poor creature was thrashing about, rapidly running out of energy and oxygen. Approaching it was somewhat hazardous; as a panicked animal, it could easily have caught me in the same thick nylon mesh. Using my dive knife, I carefully sawed through the tough cords, a task that required immense effort and concentration. When the final thread snapped, the turtle didn’t immediately dart off. Instead, it hovered for a split second, and we locked eyes. That brief, silent exchange was incredibly moving. It’s devastating to witness firsthand how industrial waste carelessly tossed overboard can turn the ocean into a death trap for such majestic species. We desperately need stricter regulations on marine industries.

I make a habit of strolling along the shoreline every weekend to pick up litter, but nothing prepared me for what I found last month. Hidden amongst a large pile of washed-up seaweed and plastic bottles, there was a seagull barely clinging to life. I would have walked right past it had it not made a faint rustling sound. A plastic six-pack ring was tightly wedged around its beak, preventing it from eating or drinking. As I cautiously reached out to help, the terrified bird snapped at me defensively, fiercely attempting to peck my hands. I couldn’t blame it for being hostile. After a tense struggle, I managed to snip the plastic with some scissors I carry. Watching it fly away, my relief was quickly overshadowed by sheer fury. It boils my blood to think that someone’s laziness in disposing of their drink packaging could inflict such agonizing suffering on innocent wildlife.

I was kayaking near a rocky outcrop when I noticed what looked like a submerged grocery bag bobbing weirdly on the surface. Paddling closer, I was horrified to discover a seal pup wrapped tightly in thick, clear packing tape and a flimsy supermarket carrier bag. The nylon handles were cutting into its neck. It struck me then just how blindly we consume. We often assume that ocean pollution is purely an industrial problem, yet here was a creature choking on the exact same mundane items I have in my kitchen cupboards. Fortunately, the pup was exhausted enough to let me pull it alongside my kayak and slice the hazardous plastic away. It plunged back into the depths instantly. Since that day, I’ve made it my mission to give talks at local schools. Unless we actively educate the community about where their everyday household rubbish ultimately ends up, these tragic encounters will only multiply.

As a marine veterinarian, I’m accustomed to treating injured wildlife, but the resilience of some animals never fails to stagger me. Recently, the coastguard brought in a juvenile dolphin that had become caught in some discarded recreational fishing line. The tough synthetic thread had sliced deeply into its dorsal fin, causing a severe infection. It was touch-and-go for the first forty-eight hours. The dolphin required an intensive course of antibiotics and months of closely monitored rehabilitation in our sanctuary’s holding pool before we could even consider releasing it. What constantly amazed me during that extensive timeframe was the creature’s unyielding will to survive, despite the appalling bodily trauma it had endured. When we finally returned him to the open sea, he leapt magnificently through the waves. It’s a bittersweet victory, though, knowing that countless other marine mammals aren’t fortunate enough to be found and treated in time.
