The abysmal living conditions, lack of oxygen, and constant damp were truly heartbreaking. Building this model really brought home the human cost of the conflict, far beyond the tactical maneuvers. Now, when people admire the finished submarine, I make a point of explaining what life was actually like for the brave individuals trapped beneath the waves.

The project definitely changed my perspective on the so-called ‘Dark Ages’.

Had I not taken up this hobby, I would probably still view steam trains merely as charming historical machines, rather than the catalysts for sweeping societal transformation that they actually were.

I’ve always been captivated by ancient Rome, so attempting a cross-section model of the Colosseum felt like a natural challenge. Like many people, my perception of the arena was heavily influenced by blockbuster films. However, my research quickly debunked those cinematic myths; the Hollywood depiction of chaotic, lawless gladiatorial combat is wildly exaggerated. In reality, fights were strictly regulated by referees, and highly trained gladiators rarely fought to the death because they were too valuable as financial investments! Even more astonishing was the discovery of the hypogeum—the complex labyrinth of subterranean tunnels and trapdoors hidden directly beneath the arena floor. Building this hidden network in miniature made me realise the sheer logistical genius required to seamlessly hoist wild animals and stage props into the sunlight. I had to completely revise my understanding of the spectacles. It was essentially an intricate theatrical production, managed by an invisible army of workers sweating below ground.
