I get incredibly frustrated when the press constantly feeds us dystopian nightmares about the future. It sometimes feels as though we are being conditioned to expect the end of the world. However, I’m convinced that tomorrow’s urban spaces will be magnificent. We are already seeing the blueprints for buildings constructed from bio-materials that absorb carbon dioxide and actively purify the urban atmosphere. Instead of concrete jungles, our cities will be literal forests. Knowing that these innovations are just around the corner has completely changed my outlook. I no longer feel a sense of dread when I look at my young nephew. Rather than inheriting a dying planet, his generation will grow up in a world where human infrastructure actually heals the environment. It is a huge relief to think that the ecological burdens we currently face will eventually become a thing of the past. The narrative of inevitable destruction is simply outdated; the reality is that we are on the verge of a green renaissance.

For a long time, technological progress meant paving over the natural world, but we are finally transitioning from conquering nature to collaborating with it. In a few decades, I believe the most advanced technology will be practically invisible, seamlessly integrated into the landscape. Imagine solar-harvesting materials woven into the leaves of artificial trees, or micro-turbines in rivers that generate power without disrupting aquatic life. What excites me the most is the idea of energy abundance. Currently, we are constantly told to reduce our carbon footprint, which creates a lot of underlying guilt whenever we turn on the heating or fly abroad. With the rapid advancements in limitless, clean fusion energy, that anxiety will disappear. We will be able to power our global society without taking anything away from the Earth. Some people argue that technology is the enemy of the environment, but I strongly believe it is the only viable tool we have to save it.

While some people dwell on the species we have lost, I prefer to focus on the ones we are going to save.
