The Quiet Poet

I have always been a nervous person. Whenever I felt worried about my grades at school or my friends, I found it extremely hard to talk to anyone about my problems. Last year, I discovered that writing my feelings down on paper made my mind feel much calmer. Instead of keeping a normal daily diary, I started writing short, emotional poems. Because I didn’t want anyone in my real life to read them, I decided to create an anonymous blog on the internet. I called myself ‘The Quiet Poet’ and started posting my creative work online.

Every evening, I would sit in my bedroom and type out my new poems. It quickly became a very important part of my daily routine, and it helped me sleep better. However, I was constantly terrified that my classmates would somehow discover my secret identity. Sometimes, I even felt anxious just looking at my own website on my laptop. If my friends found out, I was sure they would laugh at me for being so sensitive. Because of this terrible fear, I never shared the web link with anybody and didn’t expect anyone to ever visit my page.

For the first few months, nobody read my blog, which was exactly what I wanted. But one rainy Tuesday afternoon, something unexpected happened. I opened my website to upload a new poem and saw a notification on my screen. An unknown person had left a long comment under a piece I wrote about feeling lonely. At first, I panicked and seriously thought about deleting my entire blog. I was preparing myself for a cruel joke or a negative message. But when I finally forced myself to read the comment carefully, I realized I was completely wrong.

The unknown person wrote that they had been going through a very difficult period in their life. They explained that my words had perfectly described exactly how they were feeling. Most importantly, they said that reading my poem made them feel much less alone in the world. I sat at my desk and smiled, feeling a sudden sense of peace. I had originally started writing simply to deal with my own anxiety, but I had accidentally managed to comfort someone else. It made me realize that sharing your art, even secretly, is an incredibly powerful thing.

Answer Key & Explanations

1   B – The text states in the first paragraph that writing her feelings down “made my mind feel much calmer,” but she “didn’t want anyone in my real life to read them,” so she created an anonymous blog. This matches needing a safe place to share private feelings.

2   A – In paragraph 2, the writer says she was “terrified that my classmates would somehow discover my secret identity” because she was “sure they would laugh at me for being so sensitive.”

3   C – Paragraph 3 explains that when she saw the comment, she “panicked” and was “preparing myself for a cruel joke or a negative message,” which means she was worried it would be unkind.

4   B – The text states in paragraph 4 that the stranger felt the poem described exactly how they were feeling and that reading it “made them feel much less alone in the world.”

5   B – This captures the global meaning and the writer’s final reflection. She realizes that although she “started writing simply to deal with my own anxiety” (helping herself), she had “accidentally managed to comfort someone else” (brought comfort to someone struggling), showing the power of sharing art.

The Delicate Code

I have been playing my favourite fantasy PC game for almost three years. Although I still loved the story, I was starting to get a bit bored with how the digital world looked. One day, I watched a video online where another player had successfully modified the game’s graphics. The water looked completely real and the forests were beautifully detailed. I immediately decided I wanted to achieve the exact same result, even though I knew absolutely nothing about computer programming. I thought it would be a simple task of just downloading a few new images.

I found a website offering free modifications, or ‘mods’, and downloaded a huge folder of files. Because I was in such a hurry, I didn’t bother reading the long instructions. I simply copied everything directly into my main game folder and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, when I tried to start the game, the screen suddenly went completely black, and then the whole program crashed. No matter how many times I restarted my computer, the game refused to open. I was extremely upset and angry with myself for completely breaking my favourite game.

After calming down, I finally realised that computer software is incredibly delicate and that one wrong piece of code can ruin everything. I had no choice but to delete all the files and spend several hours reinstalling the original game. I decided to try modding again, but this time I changed my approach. I carefully read the online guide from start to finish. Instead of adding everything at once, I only changed one small file at a time. Then, I opened the game to test if it still worked perfectly before moving on to the next step.

By the end of the weekend, my patience had finally paid off. The game looked absolutely spectacular, and it ran smoothly without any annoying errors. Although the process was incredibly frustrating at first, it taught me a valuable lesson about paying profound attention to details. I felt so proud of myself for fixing my own mistakes and not giving up. The experience has actually made me really interested in how computers operate, and I am now planning to take a beginner’s coding class next month.

1   Why did the writer want to modify his PC game?

     (A) To learn how to become a professional computer programmer.

     (B) To make the environment in the game appear more realistic.

     (C) To create a brand new story for his favourite fantasy world.

     (D) To share his own graphics on a popular online video website.

What caused the computer game to crash?

     (A) The writer’s computer was too old to run the heavy software.

     (B) The writer downloaded a dangerous virus from a free website.

     (C) The writer transferred all the files without reading the directions.

     (D) The writer accidentally deleted his main game folder in a hurry.

3   When the writer tried to modify the game a second time, he

     (A) asked an online guide to write the difficult code for him.

     (B) spent several hours trying to find a much better website.

     (C) added all the files together before properly testing the game.

     (D) checked that the game worked after making each minor change.

How does the writer feel about the experience in the end?

     (A) Frustrated because the game still has some annoying errors in it.

     (B) Disappointed that it took a whole weekend to finish a simple task.

     (C) Pleased because it has inspired him to learn a new digital skill.

     (D) Relieved that he doesn’t have to pay attention to small details anymore.

5   What would the writer write in his blog?

     (A) Modding a game is actually quite simple. You don’t need to read the long instructions as long as you download the right images.

     (B) Breaking my game was terrible, but carefully rebuilding it taught me how delicate software is. Now I really want to learn to code!

     (C) I finally fixed my game after a frustrating weekend. Sadly, the new graphics don’t look nearly as good as the original ones did.

     (D) If your game crashes, just restart your computer a few times. That’s exactly how I got my beautiful new graphics to work perfectly.

Answer Key & Explanations

1   B – In paragraph 1, the writer states he saw a video where “The water looked completely real and the forests were beautifully detailed” and decided he “wanted to achieve the exact same result.”

2   C – In paragraph 2, the writer explains that because he was in a hurry, he “didn’t bother reading the long instructions” and “simply copied everything directly into my main game folder,” which led to the crash.

3   D – Paragraph 3 details his new approach: “I only changed one small file at a time. Then, I opened the game to test if it still worked perfectly before moving on to the next step.”

4   C – In paragraph 4, the writer notes that the experience made him “really interested in how computers operate, and I am now planning to take a beginner’s coding class next month.”

5   B – This option accurately captures the global meaning and narrative arc of the text: moving from rushing and breaking the game to patiently learning how delicate files are, which ultimately inspired a new interest in computer coding.

Creating a Comic

I have always loved inventing stories and creating interesting characters. My dream was to write a graphic novel, but there was one huge problem: I am terrible at drawing. Whenever I tried to sketch my heroes, they looked like stick figures. So, when I found out that my classmate, Liam, was a fantastic artist, I asked him if he wanted to work together on a comic. I was thrilled when he agreed, and I immediately gave him my script, which took me months to write. I was sure our project would be perfect because I had planned everything.

For the first few weeks, everything went well. I wrote extremely detailed descriptions for every single page, telling Liam exactly how the characters should look, what they should wear, and where they should stand. I expected him to follow my instructions perfectly. However, one afternoon, Liam showed me the drawings for our biggest action scene. Instead of drawing the characters fighting in a dark, scary forest like I wrote, he had moved the battle to an abandoned factory. I felt incredibly angry and betrayed. I told him he had completely ruined my original story.

Liam was quite upset, but he calmly explained his decision. He told me that the factory setting allowed him to draw more interesting shadows and gave the characters broken machines to hide behind. As I looked much closer at his detailed artwork, I slowly realised he was right. The scene looked much more exciting and dynamic than my original idea. I felt quite embarrassed about my angry reaction. I suddenly understood that Liam wasn’t just my assistant who followed orders; he was an equal creative partner in the project.

We finally finished the first chapter of our graphic novel last week, and it looks absolutely amazing. Since that argument, I have stopped trying to control every tiny detail of the artwork. Instead, I just give Liam the basic story, and we discuss the visual ideas together. I have learned a very important lesson from this experience. True collaboration means trusting your partner and letting go of absolute control. The final comic is actually much better because it combines both of our individual strengths into something completely new.

Why did the writer ask Liam to work with him?

     (A) Because Liam had already published a successful comic.

     (B) Because the writer needed someone with good drawing skills.

     (C) Because the writer wanted to teach Liam how to write stories.

     (D) Because they had been best friends for a long time.

2   How did the writer feel when he saw the drawings for the action scene?

     (A) Disappointed that Liam had drawn the characters badly.

     (B) Worried that the dark forest looked too scary for the readers.

     (C) Annoyed because Liam hadn’t followed his exact instructions.

     (D) Surprised that Liam had finished the drawings so quickly.

3   What did the writer realise after listening to Liam’s explanation?

     (A) The new setting actually improved the scene.

     (B) Liam wanted to write the rest of the story himself.

     (C) He needed to draw the shadows more carefully next time.

     (D) He should pay Liam more money for his artwork.

4   How do the two boys work together now?

     (A) The writer doesn’t tell Liam anything about the story anymore.

     (B) They talk about how the comic should look before drawing it.

     (C) Liam writes the story while the writer does all the drawings.

     (D) The writer still controls every detail to make sure it is perfect.

5   What would the writer say about making the graphic novel?

     (A) I learned that working alone is much better because you don’t have to argue about your ideas.

     (B) It was difficult at first, but I discovered that sharing control makes the final project much stronger.

     (C) I wish I had never asked my classmate to help me, because my original story was completely ruined.

     (D) The most important thing about making a comic is making sure the artist does exactly what the writer wants.

Answer Key & Explanations

1   B – The text states in the first paragraph, “I am terrible at drawing… So, when I found out that my classmate, Liam, was a fantastic artist, I asked him if he wanted to work together.”

2   C – In the second paragraph, the writer explains that he “expected him to follow my instructions perfectly.” When Liam changed the setting to a factory, the writer “felt incredibly angry and betrayed.”

3   A – The third paragraph mentions that when the writer looked closer at the artwork, he realised Liam was right and “The scene looked much more exciting and dynamic than my original idea.”

4   B – In the fourth paragraph, the writer says, “I just give Liam the basic story, and we discuss the visual ideas together.”

B – This option captures the global meaning and the lesson learned in the final paragraph: the writer gave up trying to control everything, realizing that “True collaboration means trusting your partner” and that it makes the comic “much better.”
