Making Jewellery for a Good Cause

My name is Mia, and I am fifteen years old. In my free time, I really enjoy making jewellery. I usually use small glass beads to create colourful bracelets for my friends and family. I also love animals very much, so I often visit the local animal rescue centre at the weekend to help the staff.

Last month, the manager of the rescue centre said they had a problem. They needed more money to buy food and medicine for the sick dogs and cats. I felt very sad and wanted to assist them. Suddenly, I had a great idea. I decided to sell my handmade bracelets at the summer school fair.

I asked two of my classmates to help me. We sat in my living room for three evenings and made over fifty beautiful bracelets. On the day of the school fair, we put everything on a large wooden table. Our jewellery was incredibly popular! Many teachers and students loved our work and bought our products. By the end of the afternoon, we had nothing left.

The next day, I went to the rescue centre and gave all the cash to the manager. He was extremely surprised and thanked me for my hard work. I felt incredibly proud to help the cute animals. I am already planning to make more things to sell for the charity next year!

A Street Library

Fifteen-year-old Sam loves reading. However, last month he finished all the stories in his bedroom. The town library is quite far from his house, so he couldn’t easily borrow more. Then, while he was looking online, he saw a great idea: a “take a book, leave a book” box for the street.

Sam asked his father to help him. They looked in their garage and found a large, old wooden box. Sam painted it bright yellow because he wanted everyone to notice it easily. When it was dry, they carried it outside and put it under a tall tree on their street. Sam put five of his old books inside.

For the first two days, nobody opened the box. Sam felt a bit disappointed. But on the third day, he saw an old neighbor taking a novel and leaving two comic books. By the end of the week, many different people were stopping to look inside.

Now, the yellow box is always full of amazing things to read. Sam is very happy because people on his street often meet at the box and talk to each other. It is a fantastic success. In fact, Sam is going to make another one for the park next summer!

Why We Should All Volunteer

My name is Mark, and I am sixteen years old. I am writing this article for our town newspaper because I want to talk about something important. Many teenagers believe they are too busy with homework or sports to help the community. Some also think they are too young to make a real difference. I am here to tell you that this is simply not true.

Last year, I decided to spend one Saturday morning picking up rubbish in our local park. At first, I was not very excited. It was early, and I wanted to stay in bed. However, when I arrived, I met five other teenagers. We worked together, listened to music, and actually had a lot of fun. When we finished, the park looked beautiful, and I felt incredibly proud of our team.

Volunteering is not just about doing free work; it has many amazing benefits for young people. When you help others, you learn useful new skills that they don’t teach you in the classroom. Also, working with different people helps you become much more confident. Finally, doing volunteer work looks absolutely fantastic when you apply for a job or a place at university in the future.

You don’t need to give up all your free time to be a volunteer. Just two or three hours a month can really help our town. You can visit the community center, ask your teachers at school, or search online for local charities that need help. So, please find a project you care about and start volunteering today!

What advice does Mark give about the time needed for volunteering?

     (A) You should spend every Saturday morning helping out.

     (B) You only need a small amount of time each month.
