Photographing the City

Leo is a fifteen-year-old high school student who loves photography. When his parents gave him a camera for his birthday last year, he usually took pictures of his friends or his pet dog. But soon, he wanted to try something new. He decided to start photographing the famous buildings in his city.

Every Saturday morning, Leo wakes up at six o’clock and takes the bus to the city centre. He likes going early because there are fewer cars and people on the streets. He tries to find interesting places to stand so the buildings look completely different. Sometimes, he waits for nearly an hour just for the sun to shine in the right place.

Last month, Leo’s school had an art competition. He really wanted to do well, so he gave his teacher a beautiful black-and-white photo of the town’s oldest clock tower. His teacher was surprised and said it looked like a famous painting.

Making History Fun on Holiday

My name is Maria, and I am fourteen years old. Next month, my family and I are going on holiday to France. We usually go to the beach, but this year my parents want to visit some famous old palaces. Normally, I don’t help with the holiday plans, but this time I decided to find out about the places before we go.

First, I went to the town library and borrowed some history books. At first, I thought they would be boring, but I was wrong! I also watched some great videos on the internet. I learned a lot of interesting stories about the kings and queens who lived in the palaces hundreds of years ago. It was much better than just learning dates for a school test.

When we finally arrived at the biggest palace on the first day of our holiday, it was amazing. I knew exactly where to go. I showed my parents the beautiful dining room and told them stories about the big parties there. My mum and dad were very surprised because I knew more than the tour guide!

Now, I think differently about history. Reading about the palaces made the holiday so much more exciting because everything felt real. I have already decided that I am going to study the history of every city we visit in the future.
