Making a New Friend

Thirteen-year-old Lily felt very nervous. It was her first day at Oakbridge High School because her family had moved to a new city during the summer holidays. In the morning, the lessons were fine, but she was really worried about lunchtime. She didn’t know anyone, and she didn’t want to sit by herself.

When the bell rang for lunch, Lily walked slowly to the large school cafeteria. It was a huge room, and it was full of loud, happy students. Everyone was already eating and laughing with their friends. Lily held her lunchbox tightly in her hands. She wanted to run away, but she knew she had to be brave.

She looked around the room and saw a small table near the window. Three girls were sitting there. One of the girls was reading a comic book about superheroes. Lily absolutely loved comic books! She took a deep breath, walked over to the table, and smiled. “Excuse me, can I sit here with you?” she asked quietly.

The girl with the comic book looked up and smiled back. “Of course! I’m Chloe,” she said. Chloe asked Lily about her favorite superheroes, and the girls talked for the whole lunch break. Lily felt incredibly happy and relaxed. She learned that being brave is the best way to meet new people.
