Traveling with Technology

Leo

When I travel, I never pack my laptop because it is too heavy to carry in my backpack. Instead, I take my e-reader. It is very thin, and I can read lots of different stories on its screen while I sit on the train. I also listen to music on my smartphone. However, the most important thing in my bag is a large portable charger. If the journey is long, I need it to keep my phone full of electricity! I don’t share it with anyone, though.

Maya

My parents bought me a new tablet last year, and it goes everywhere with me. I always use it on planes to do my schoolwork. Last time, I finished a whole math project before we landed! It has a really big screen, which is great because my younger brother and I watch funny comedies on it together. I also pack some paper magazines to read. I often forget to charge my tablet, so it dies quickly, but I never remember to bring an extra battery.

Sam

Vacations are for resting, so I refuse to do any homework when I travel! To make sure I can sleep on noisy buses, I always wear a pair of large headphones. They cover my ears completely and stop me from hearing crying babies or loud conversations. I also pack a small pocket camera. I love taking it out to record everything we do on our trips. My sister always asks to borrow it, but I never let anyone else touch it because it was expensive.

Packing for Two Seasons

Anna

Packing for hot and cold weather is difficult. For my thin t-shirts and shorts, I don’t fold them flat. Instead, I roll them into tight little balls. This gives me much more room! To pack my thick sweaters for cold days, I put them in plastic bags and press all the air out. They become completely flat! I usually take a light jacket with me on the plane, but I pack my really big coat. I also pack my boots carefully, but I never put anything inside them.

Ben

When I pack for different seasons, I always start with my biggest boots. I place them flat under everything else so the bag doesn’t fall over. To find more space, I hide my swimming costumes and summer socks inside my trainers! I sometimes roll my thick trousers, but not my t-shirts. I don’t actually pack many things for the snow. I only take a few warm items and decide to go shopping for a new jumper or hat when I reach my hotel. It is much easier that way.

Chloe

My family and I often visit places where it is sunny one day and snowing the next. I hate packing big winter coats because they fill the whole case. So, I just put my thickest one on my body for the flight, even if I get a bit hot! I only have one suitcase, so my sister and I put all our summer dresses and shorts together in her bag. It saves so much space! I use small plastic bags, but only for my shampoo, not my jumpers. We also buy summer hats there!

Three tourists describe the most important document they keep in their hand luggage.

Lucas

For me, the thing I always have in my bag is my passport. I usually keep my flight details on my mobile, so I don’t carry paper tickets. But a passport is different! My grandfather said I must never fly without it, and I always follow his wise words. It is the only way to prove who I am because it shows my face and my date of birth. I keep it in a special pocket in my bag so I never leave it at home. It didn’t cost much to get, but it is my most useful item!

Sarah

The most important paper in my hand luggage is my travel health insurance. My best friend thinks I don’t need it, but I always take it. It certainly wasn’t cheap to buy this year, but it makes me feel safe. If I eat something bad or get ill on holiday, this paper means I can go to a hospital without paying again. It is just a boring page with my name and dates, so there is no photo on it. I always put it in my bag a week before I fly.

Ming

I always keep a printed copy of my hotel and flight details in my small bag. Last year, I traveled without it and only had the information on my phone. When I arrived, my battery died and I couldn’t find my hotel! Now, I prefer paper just in case my screen breaks or I have no power. Printing it is completely free. Before I walk out my front door, I read the pages again and again to be sure everything is correct. It helps me relax, and I don’t worry about finding my way in a new city.
