Connecting Across the World

Six months ago, fifteen-year-old Niran left his home in Bangkok to study at a high school in London. He really enjoys his new classes every morning, and his teachers are very kind to him. However, the weather in England is often wet and cold. Most of all, Niran misses his old friends from Thailand very much.

At first, talking to his friends was very difficult. The time difference was a big problem for him. When Niran finishes his school day in the afternoon, it is already late at night in Bangkok, and his friends are sleeping. He often sent them text messages, but it just wasn’t the same as chatting together.

A Diary of My City Adventure

Last autumn, I travelled to Madrid to study Spanish. I stayed there for three months. Before this trip, I always lived with my parents in our quiet town. During my first week in the capital city, I felt quite afraid. The streets were very noisy and I missed my family a lot. Everything was completely new to me.

Soon, I had to do many things by myself. At home, my mum usually cooked my meals and washed my clothes. In Madrid, I had to learn how to do these chores. I remember the first time I made dinner. I burnt the hot food and had to eat a cold sandwich instead! I also needed to understand the underground train system to get to school.

After a month, things became much easier. I started to make friends at my language school. We decided to visit famous museums and parks at the weekends. I planned our train journeys and bought the tickets online. I didn’t need to ask my teachers or my host family for help anymore.

Now, my time in Spain is finishing. I am packing my bags to fly back to my hometown tomorrow. When I look in the mirror, I feel like a different person. I am much more confident. This long trip taught me how to look after myself. I am ready for my next adventure.
