Learning to Teach

Fifteen-year-old Sarah loves spending her free time at the local riding school. While her friends usually go to the cinema or the sports centre at the weekend, Sarah does something different. She follows David, an experienced horse riding instructor, to learn his job. She wants to understand how to teach people to ride safely.

Sarah’s day starts very early. Before the new students arrive, David shows Sarah how to check the equipment on the horses. This must be perfect, or it can be dangerous. When the classes begin, Sarah doesn’t ride. She watches carefully while David explains the rules of the riding school to the beginners.

Last Saturday, there was a little girl who felt very frightened of her big horse. Sarah wanted to run and help immediately. But David told Sarah to wait. He walked over slowly and spoke quietly to the animal and the child. He explained to Sarah that making sudden movements can scare the horses and cause accidents.
