ANSWER KEY & EXPLANATIONS
1 (B) During
- Why it is correct (The Key): “Our unforgettable vacation in Europe” is a noun phrase representing a period or event. We use During + Noun Phrase to indicate the timeframe.
- Error Analysis: (A) While (Common Mistake) requires a subject and a verb (e.g., while we were on vacation). (C) For (Strong Distractor) indicates duration (for two weeks), not when it happened. (D) When (Structural Error).
2 (C) while
- Why it is correct (The Key): “We were walking” is a full clause (Subject + Verb). We use While + Clause to show that an action occurred simultaneously with another.
- Error Analysis: (A) during (Common Mistake) cannot be followed by a clause. (B) for (Structural Error). (D) meanwhile (Structural Error) is an adverb used to start a new sentence, not a conjunction linking two clauses.
3 (B) during
- Why it is correct (The Key): “The chaotic morning rush hour” is a noun phrase.
- Error Analysis: (A) while (Common Mistake). (C) across (Structural Error). (D) as (Strong Distractor) requires a clause (as the rush hour was happening).
4 (B) While
- Why it is correct (The Key): “I was taking pictures…” is a past continuous clause.
- Error Analysis: (A) During (Common Mistake). (C) Throughout (Strong Distractor) requires a noun phrase (throughout the trip). (D) Because (Structural Error) changes the meaning illogically.

- Error Analysis: (A) while (Common Mistake). (B) when (Structural Error). (C) as (Strong Distractor).

- Why it is correct (The Key): While can be followed directly by a present participle (V-ing) when the subject is the same as in the main clause. “While standing” is a reduced clause meaning “while we were standing”.

GRAMMAR POINTS TO REMEMBER
1 The Golden Rule of During vs. While:
Both words answer the question when by showing that two things happened at the same time. You choose between them based strictly on the grammar that immediately follows the word.
2 DURING + Noun / Noun Phrase
- Use during when the background context is packaged as a “thing” or an “event”. There is NO subject and NO verb after “during”.
- Highly Common B1 Collocations: during the trip, during the vacation, during the flight, during my stay, during the tour.
- Example: I lost my phone during the trip.
3 WHILE + Clause (Subject + Verb)
- Use while when you describe the background context as an ongoing action. It requires a full sentence structure (usually in the Past Continuous tense).
- Example: I lost my phone while we were traveling.
4 WHILE + V-ing (Reduced Clause)
- In English, if the person doing the action in the while clause is the same person in the main sentence, you can drop the subject and the “to be” verb. You are left with While + V-ing.
- Example: Keep your bag zipped while walking through the city. (Instead of: while you are walking).
- Warning: Do NOT use “during” with an active V-ing action. (During walking is incorrect).
