A Liam: Product Designer

Working as an industrial designer, I’m at the forefront of the circular economy. We design electronics intended to be completely disassembled and repurposed. Initially, I was convinced it would be straightforward, but my early prototypes were a total disaster; the components simply couldn’t be detached without shattering. I soon realised that designing for disassembly severely limits the materials at your disposal. You can’t just use industrial adhesives or cheap composite plastics, which undeniably restricts your creative freedom. If I had known how tough it would be, I might have reconsidered my career path! I often wish the government would step in to subsidise these eco-friendly materials, which would make my job easier. Nevertheless, overcoming these hurdles is incredibly fulfilling. When a modular device finally rolls off the production line, knowing it will never end up slowly rotting in a landfill gives me an immense sense of professional pride.

 

B Maya: Marketing Executive

My primary role is to market the concept of circular products to the general public, and to be perfectly frank, it is an uphill struggle. Because these items are meticulously engineered to last and be repaired, they generally cost considerably more to manufacture. Consequently, this translates to a premium price on the shelf. Shoppers are understandably hesitant to part with their hard-earned cash upfront, often opting for cheaper, disposable alternatives instead. You can’t just tell them a product is ‘good for the planet’; you must appeal directly to their wallets. We spend a substantial amount of time designing campaigns that demonstrate how investing in a modular device will actually save them money in the long run, as they won’t have to replace the entire unit. I do sometimes worry about the logistics of how we collect these items back, but once buyers grasp the lifetime value, their attitudes generally shift.

 

C Noah: Supply Chain Manager

The circular economy sounds phenomenal in theory, but the physical reality is an absolute nightmare. My job involves managing ‘reverse logistics’—essentially figuring out how to retrieve a worn-out appliance from a customer’s living room. It’s significantly more complicated than delivering it in the first place! Furthermore, even if we successfully get the products back, there is a severe shortage of specialised processing plants equipped to properly dismantle and sort the individual parts. If we genuinely want this concept to succeed on a global scale, major corporations can no longer afford to operate in silos. Rival tech and retail giants must put aside their competitive differences and invest jointly in a shared recycling infrastructure. I know some designers find the strict material constraints incredibly frustrating, but until the supply chain is properly established, even the most innovative and sustainable designs will ultimately fail to make an impact.

 

D Chloe: Environmental Consultant

I advise firms on how to transition to a circular business model. While many are genuinely committed, I frequently come across companies that merely desire the positive public relations. It drives me completely up the wall when brands release a single ‘recyclable’ product while the vast majority of their catalogue remains highly polluting, yet they still audaciously market themselves as eco-champions. This kind of greenwashing misleads consumers who are genuinely trying to make ethical purchasing choices. Ultimately, relying on corporate goodwill simply isn’t enough to spark a revolution. Unless policymakers step up and introduce robust legislation that heavily penalises waste and mandates circular design, this vital movement will remain a niche trend rather than the industry standard. It’s not just about overcoming the obvious logistical barriers of transportation; it’s about creating a strict legal framework where producing single-use goods is no longer financially viable for any business.

    When we first brought the drones to the barren hillsides of the Black Mountains, I was blown away by their sheer efficiency. What would traditionally take a team of human volunteers several grueling weeks to accomplish, our automated devices pulled off in a mere matter of days. It’s an absolute game-changer for reforestation. However, the project wasn’t entirely plain sailing. During our first trial, the freezing high-altitude winds caused the drones’ batteries to drain at an alarming rate, threatening to cut our mission abruptly short. Fortunately, we managed to bypass this hurdle by modifying the power-management software, allowing them to conserve energy between drops. We are currently preparing to move our operations to another peak in the same range next month. While some team members had initially questioned if the batteries could handle the cold, seeing the swarm effortlessly shoot out seeds across the slopes quickly put our minds at rest.

    I must confess, when the idea of aerial reforestation was first pitched, I was highly sceptical. I took it for granted that merely scattering seeds from the sky would be a waste of time, assuming they would just be eaten by birds or washed away by the rain. Thankfully, the biodegradable seed pods we use are packed with essential nutrients and heavy enough to embed themselves, which completely proved me wrong. For me, the most vital aspect of our project is biodiversity. It is absolutely crucial that we don’t just blanket the area with cheap, fast-growing pines. Instead, we carefully curate a diverse mix of native species to ensure a balanced, resilient ecosystem. Of course, our job isn’t finished once the drones return to base. We are obligated to conduct regular follow-up surveys on foot to assess the germination rates and ensure the young shoots are thriving.

    The areas we are trying to restore are characterised by steep, treacherous ravines and unstable rocky cliffs. Attempting to plant trees there manually wouldn’t just be difficult; it would be incredibly hazardous for anyone on foot. That’s precisely why deploying unmanned aerial vehicles is the perfect solution. Before any device leaves the ground, we spend hours meticulously scanning the terrain using advanced 3D mapping software. This generates precise topographical data, allowing us to program the exact coordinates for the optimal dropping zones. Interestingly, when we first arrived in the village, the older residents dismissed us as kids playing with expensive toys. They thought the whole thing was just a fleeting gimmick. However, since the first saplings have become visible and local wildlife has begun to slowly return, they’ve completely changed their tune and now actively cheer us on. It’s brilliant to finally have their backing.

    Getting this ambitious project off the ground was remarkably tough, primarily because industrial-grade drones simply don’t come cheap. We experienced a somewhat rocky start, struggling to gather enough resources through local bake sales and online crowdfunding. Ultimately, it was a substantial grant from an international environmental charity that provided the financial lifeline we so desperately needed. Managing that budget carefully has been a steep learning curve, requiring constant monitoring to ensure we don’t overspend on maintenance or software upgrades. Despite the immense pressure, the impact we’ve had on our own team morale has been phenomenal; we’ve gone from being anxious amateurs to confident environmentalists. Looking ahead, my ultimate ambition is to scale up our operations. Once we have fully restored this regional valley, I am determined to roll out our drone-planting initiative in neighbouring countries that have suffered from severe logging. The technology has boundless potential, and we are just scratching the surface.
