When my geography teacher suggested we watch Waterworlds, I took it for granted that it would be another depressing film about climate change. I also thought the idea of building entire cities on the ocean sounded like pure science fiction, and frankly, completely unworkable. However, the documentary totally won me over. The architects explained the sheer scale of the engineering required to securely anchor these massive platforms to the seabed, which was simply mind-boggling. What really stood out was how these floating modules are designed to withstand massive hurricanes. Instead of breaking under the pressure, they flexibly rise and fall with the storm surges, which is a brilliant feat of engineering. While I’m not sure I’d actually want to live on the water full-time myself, seeing how these designers have tackled such an enormous logistical challenge really gave me hope for the future of urban living.

I’ve always been passionate about marine biology, so I tuned into the documentary with a highly critical eye. So often, human construction simply destroys coastal environments. Yet, what fascinated me about these floating cities is that they are actively designed to regenerate the ocean. The underwater sections of the platforms are coated in a special material that encourages coral and oysters to grow, essentially creating artificial reefs that boost local fish populations. It was such a relief to see a futuristic vision where we aren’t just trying to conquer the ocean with concrete walls, but rather adapting to it and living in harmony with the tides. The film also touched upon how expensive this technology is right now, but I honestly believe that if we work alongside nature, the long-term ecological benefits will easily outweigh the initial financial costs.

The documentary was undeniably visually stunning, and the computer-generated images of gleaming, solar-powered islands looked like an absolute paradise. However, I couldn’t help but feel a bit cynical about the reality of the situation. Building these zero-emission, floating utopias is going to cost an absolute fortune. My main worry is that these incredible safe havens will end up becoming exclusive gated communities for the ultra-rich, leaving ordinary people behind to deal with the harsh realities of rising sea levels. The programme glossed over who would actually pay for all this. In my opinion, unless authorities step in to subsidise the construction and regulate who gets to live there, it will just widen the gap between the wealthy and the poor. While the technology is fascinating, it won’t be a true solution until we can guarantee that it’s affordable and accessible to everyone.

To be honest, I only watched the documentary because I had to write a review for my media studies class, but I found myself absolutely riveted. What gripped me wasn’t the futuristic technology, but the deep dive into how living on water would actually affect human behaviour. The architects brought in psychologists to design community spaces that prevent people from feeling isolated or seasick, which I found surprisingly absorbing. They also detailed how each floating neighbourhood would be entirely independent, relying on rainwater harvesting and aeroponic farms to produce all their own food and drinking water without relying on the mainland. Some people interviewed in the film said they would find the lack of solid ground terrifying, but I think the lifestyle looks incredibly peaceful. In fact, if they ever build a prototype city, I’d jump at the chance to pack my bags and move there!
